The symbolic value of the color starts from black, the absence of light, pitch oxen, the moment before coming into the world, the moment before the windows of the brain open wide: the eyes. The work that deals with the theme of "black" is a large canvas entitled "Opera al nero" of 2100x160 cm entirely colored with large charcoal coal on the support and a half charred branch as an example of the generator tool. It is the first moment, the most crucial in which all the alchemical ingredients must be "killed", macerating and cooking them for a long time in a uniform black mass, the natural process of fire.
Black is oxen, moment before coming into the world; Black as a solid representation, contingent on matter even in the absence of light, which gives color and three-dimensionality, as a reduction to the essence of the solidity of things and their material depth. The nigredo, a Latin term meaning black or black color, denotes in alchemy the Black phase of the Great Work, that is, the initial step in the path of creation of the philosopher's stone, that of putrefaction and decomposition.
