Le poisson (2019) Sculpture par Miodrag Dz

This piece is a three dimensional sculpture of a 65cm by 30cm by 100cm molding polymer smooth, dense fish. The sculpture is a dark hue with the relief portions painted dark gold and edged with white areas which glow in the dark. These areas that have white edges are the inlays of the eyes, the dorsal and caudal fins, and the edges of the crosshatch. There are no pectoral fins or mouth. The fish is constructed by a crosshatched structure, that at first may seem like scales, but visually, appears to be analogous to a cage-like formation. The lines are minimal and sleek creating clear shapes that outline a symbol of a plain fish. The rendering of the proportions is fairly accurate for depicting a fish. The patterns seen are the crosshatching on the body and the lines on the caudal fin. The articulation of different parts of the fish’s anatomy transition smoothly to materialize as one solid structure. The focal point is the body of the fish, more prominently, the cage it is in, and it is all designed very minimally. The type of fish is ambiguous and lacking some anatomy which may have been done to conceal further identity as nothing more than a fish. The angle of the fish should be noted. It is set on a pedestal with the front pointed lower than the tail end. The fish is therefore not perfectly horizontal, creating kinetic energy or a kinetic line downward. If the fish is going down and wrapped in a cage, it might be that the fish cannot raise himself up to swim. The way the pedestal is installed with such proximity to the body also evokes a sense of weight and heaviness as if it has reached the ground floor of the sea. The fish is glowing, giving off the impression of being alive, yet it isn’t thriving. The glowing of the eyes may symbolize the fixation of a dream or a vision, that indeed the fish does have a destination in mind. Considering these factors, the fish seems to be in a predicament involving his freedom and personal growth. It is encased in gold, but held down. This close observation of detail sets the tone for a fish in bondage. The dark coloring of the fish creates an ominous tone that something about its current situation may be wrong, while the glow of its eyes, other detailing, and the golden cage project luminous and living energy. Quite the contrast of what a fish is meant to do - to swim all around through water moving through independently. Some may see the cage as strange scales or as a block holding the fish down and constrained from full mobility.
