There are three authentic versions of Van Gogh's 'La Chambre à coucher', distinguishable by the pictures on the wall. They depict van Gogh's bedroom at 2, Place Lamartine in Arles, Bouches-du-Rhône, France,(the Yellow House). Van Gogh started the 1st version (now in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam) during mid October 1888. In April 1889, he sent it to his brother regretting that it had been damaged by the flood of the Rhône while he was interned at the Old Hospital in Arles. Theo proposed to have it relined and sent back to him in order to copy it. The 2nd version (now in the Art Institute of Chicago), a "repetition" in original scale, was executed in September 1889. The 3rd version is smaller, given to his sister Wil (on permanent display in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris).
My interest is in the location of the artist to produce this composition. With considerable detail I have reproduced the alternative view of this famous and favorite bedroom.
