Persona (2011) Pintura por Haleli Sahar-Sadeh

Haleli Sahar-Sadeh was born in 1948 in the Jordan Valley, Israel. Even as a child she was impressed by paintings, though on those days paintings were fairly conservative. The freedom of expression in art was not part of the formal education, at that time. Drawing was viewed solely as a technical skill, not at all as art.

At her first years as an artist, Haleli drew her paintings through a process of observation, looking at people, faces and nature, using pencil and pastel colors. Years have passed in intensive artistic work, when eventually she learned that a necessary condition for art is freedom, which is driven by self awareness.

Then came the time to start expressing herself freely, drawing oil paintings, from her imagination, using oil on canvas. These contemporary art paintings were unplanned, impulsive, and were dubbed by her: “soul paintings”. They were literally “born” through smearing paint on paper and canvas while allowing the painting to create itself.

Only later she grasped the significance of these new creations for herself, and their role in her life. They tell Haleli’s yearning for the simplicity and purity of her childhood, and the dreams of her youth.
