"I believe that every artist has a unique touch as we all have different personalities and the way we all express ourselves is unique in every way imaginable, as each painting is driven more by our feelings and all the visual information we soak from the outside world, the paintings I create can differ in style and I even though I start a painting based on an idea the painting always takes a twist and surprises me in the becoming..."
What inspired you to create art and become an artist? (events, feelings, experiences...)
I have had a creative personality towards painting and drawing as a child as common as this may sound, I believe my parents had a somewhat contrition as they have always encouraged me to continue this even as a teenager and later on as an adult. I believe it is important to have people believe in your dreams at some point to help one to keep going and persuade their passions. I never knew myself not wanting to draw, paint and create, and I did.
What is your artistic background, the techniques and subjects you have experimented with so far?
I have a degree in visual arts and additionally, I hold a certificate of competence as a draft a for architecture and design. My career started as a product designer for handbags and accessories however, as my journey unfolded, I found my true calling which is painting. In the pursuit of my core passion I transitioned into the realm of fine arts.
What are the 3 aspects that differentiate you from other artists, making your work unique?
I believe that every artist has a unique touch as we all have different personalities and the way we all express ourselves is unique in every way imaginable, as each painting is driven more by our feelings and all the visual information we soak from the outside world, the paintings I create can differ in style and I even though I start a painting based on an idea the painting always takes a twist and surprises me in the becoming. I am very spontaneous, I let myself enjoy the process and have fun.
For me, being unique means being true to myself and not think to much of what I should be or paint.
Where does your inspiration come from?
Inspiration comes to me from everything I see, colours and textures, what I have learned about composition, everything I experience and feel on a day to day basis and so much from experimenting. This is truly a difficult question to answer as it sometimes feels like inspiration has been truly gift.
What is your artistic approach? What visions, sensations or feelings do you want to evoke in the viewer?
I would like to think that people will feel energised and alive when they see or acquire my work, that there are no limits to their imagination and that they are free to feel without boundaries.
What is the process of creating your works? Spontaneous or with a long preparatory process (technical, inspiration from art classics or other)?
My artistic process is one of spontaneity and intuition. I surrender to the fluidity of paint, allowing it to guide my hand and shape the emerging forms and compositions on the canvas.
Do you use a particular work technique? if so, can you explain it?
I love using a range of techniques when creating my artworks, brushes, pallet knives, sponges, my fingers on the bare canvas, and so many quirky tools I may find in the studio. I love finding new tools that will create different effects and textures. This is the ‘thing’ about abstract art, it gives me the freedom to break the rules and create something that feels free and original to myself. Painting on a blank canvas is like building a new world from scratch.
Do you have a format or medium that you are most comfortable with? if yes, why ?
I like painting with acrylic mediums and spray paint the most as they dry quicker and for that reason I can create layers, even more so on my collage artworks as I am able to mix them and come back on one when it doesn’t feel right just yet. But I also love oils as they challenge me create deeper artworks, the silky feeling when painting is so satisfying.
Where do you produce your works? At home, in a shared workshop or in your own workshop? And in this space, how do you organize your creative work?
I started to paint at home, in the kitchen and garage as hobby 8 years ago. I now work in a rented space which is my studio, I am quite lucky as my studio has expanded in size significantly since I started painting as a full time artist. It helps me a lot to have natural light and big white walls to hang the pieces, it is important to have a few of the artworks on show. All the artworks I keep in the studio are in different styles and this helps me keep my creative flow, I prefer not to focus on a single painting to completion, but instead work on 3-4 artworks simultaneously. This rather more unconventional method acts as a mental pause and meditation allowing my mind to process everything freely between styles and and compositions. I suppose it is a reflection of how my mind is wired. I am embracing the beauty of artistic diversity and freedom.
Does your work lead you to travel to meet new collectors, for fairs or exhibitions? If so, what does it bring you?
Yes, absolutely. I love meeting with new artists, especially. I have visited a few studios. It’s really exciting! Art fairs and exhibitions are great too but nothing compares to a one on one chat with a fellow artist who’s work I love and want to understand from a deeper, more personal level.
How do you imagine the evolution of your work and your career as an artist in the future?
Challenging for sure! I discover a new me every year in terms of my evolution and I love it! I follow up closely a few interior designers and I try to keep an open mind to ways I can create art that will resonate future interior trends, equally I aim to create better art and hopefully one day I will see it as part of our history. It will be a long journey but I do aim to make it all the way to the top and become the best version of artist, self.
What is the theme, style or technique of your latest artistic production?
This year I have started a geometric abstract collection which combines oil mediums and chalk. Something I had longed to do for some time.
Can you tell us about your most important exhibition experience?
I have participated in a few local art exhibitions but the most important one is yet to come this spring, in London, which is The Other Art Fair :)
If you could have created a famous work in the history of art, which one would you choose? And why ?
“Composition 8” by Wassily Kandinsky. It’s fascinating to recognise the pivotal role a college art teacher played in shaping my artistic journey. The unexpected compliment to one of my compositions left an incredible mark on me, sparking the belief that I could become an abstract painter. It was a defining moment that instilled in me the confidence to explore and embrace the world of abstraction and also laying the foundation for the artist I am today.
If you could invite one famous artist (dead or alive) to dinner, who would it be? How would you suggest he spend the evening?
I admire quite a few artists such as W. Kandinsky, J. Pollock, J. Mitchell, G. Richter or Lee Krasner but there is one painter I would travel in time to meet and that is Willem de Kooning, and really, just as much, Lee Krasner. I obsess and admire them the most!
If time travel was within reach, there is one destination: The studio of W.D. Kooning
Imagining myself in his presence, surrounded by his outstanding work, to contemplate on his canvases, to share the silence of creation and perhaps paint alongside with him, with a forgotten bottle of vintage wine in a quiet corner - this would be for me a timeless communion, a meeting of artistic spirits across time and age.
