Shipping a work of art, whether fragile, large, or small, requires careful preparation. Proper packaging is essential not only to protect the artwork but also to ensure customer satisfaction. A well-prepared package means no problems upon arrival !

In this article, discover best practices, techniques, and recommended materials for secure packaging, suitable for different types of artwork.

Why good packaging is essential

Packaging is a key step in the sale of artwork , whether for local delivery or international shipment. During transport, artworks are exposed to numerous risks: multiple handling, changes in mode of transport, shocks, pressure, etc.

➡️ A customer who receives a work in perfect condition will be more likely to recommend your work. Conversely, a dissatisfied customer may not only request a return, but also never buy from you again.

Seller's Responsibility: Packaging is your sole responsibility. Take photos of each stage of the packaging process to prove proper packaging in the event of a dispute.

General good practices for packaging

  • Use materials that are solid and suitable for the nature of the work.

  • Never ship a freshly completed work: it must be perfectly dry.

  • Wear cotton gloves when handling artwork, especially on paper or canvas.

  • Always indicate on the packaging that it is a fragile item .

  • Include the cost of packaging in your selling price.

  • If you are unsure of your ability to pack properly, use a specialist carrier.

Packing guide according to the type of work

Drawings, paintings, photographs, sculptures... Each work requires specific packaging depending on its medium, size, and fragility. In the following sections, discover how to effectively protect each type of artwork for safe shipping.

Packing a small format framed or mounted painting

  • Surface protection:

    • Place the artwork face down on a sheet of tissue paper (neutral pH).

    • Cover with kraft paper and secure with painter's tape.

  • Corner protection:

    • Add foam corners, especially if the artwork is under glass.

  • Intermediate protection:

    • Wrap in bubble wrap, canvas side up.

  • Shipping carton:

    • Place the whole thing in a suitable box with reinforcements so that it does not move.

  • Labeling:

    • Affix the “Fragile” markings and shipping documents.

Packing a large or framed work

  1. Follow the same steps as for painting on a frame, reinforcing each layer of protection.

  2. Attach rigid panels (cardboard or plastic) to the front and back of the work.

  3. Place everything in a custom-made wooden crate , well wedged with foam blocks.

  4. Close securely with screws or reinforced tape.

  5. Clearly indicate the top , bottom , and side to open .

Sending works in tubes (drawings, photos, works on paper)

  1. Preparation of the work:

    • Place it on tissue paper, then wrap in kraft paper.

  2. Winding:

    • Carefully roll the artwork and wrap it in bubble wrap or thin foam.

  3. Solid tube:

    • Insert everything into a thick cardboard or PVC tube , wedging the ends well.

  4. Double protection:

    • Slide the tube into a suitable rectangular or triangular cardboard box .

Important: Never ship in a thin tube. Avoid "paperwork" type tubes.

Wrapping a sculpture or installation

Each sculpture is unique and requires personalized packaging. Here are the main rules to follow:

  1. Direct protection:

    • Wrap in several layers of bubble wrap, especially fragile areas.

  2. Sturdy case:

    • Use a rigid wooden crate with 5 to 10 cm of space around the artwork.

  3. Internal wedging:

    • Fill all voids with packing particles or foam. Never paper , which will collapse under the weight.

  4. Closing:

    • Screw or tape securely. Specify opening and orientation areas.

  5. Labeling:

    • Clearly state the fragility of the item and attach the shipping documents.
