A sunflower farm in the southwest of London has taken steps to address an increasing trend of guests posing for risqué photos among the vibrant sunflowers. Sam Wilson, a third-generation farmer at Sam's Sunflowers, part of Stoke Fruit Farms, posted signs reminding visitors to uphold decency and refrain from nudity while on the farm premises. The warnings come as an attempt to create a family-friendly atmosphere and ensure the comfort of all guests, including children.
As weather conditions improved in recent weeks, tourists flocked to the sunflower farm to partake in the beloved British summer activity of flower picking. However, an uptick in individuals disrobing for explicit photography prompted Mr. Wilson to take action. He implemented signs across the farm and turned to social media to emphasize the importance of adhering to appropriate behavior.
Despite this, photography is actively encouraged on the farm. Mr. Wilson has even incorporated props like a grand piano, vintage bathtub, and tractor throughout the sunflower fields to enhance photo opportunities. The farm's vast sunflower population, totaling around 2 million, provides a scenic backdrop for various photography, including more provocative shots.
While incidents of nudity have occurred in the past, they have become more frequent this year, at times in locations visible to young children. Mr. Wilson stressed that it's about respecting all visitors, regardless of age, and maintaining a family-oriented environment.
The signs and social media notices have yielded positive results, with visitors responding positively to the call for decency. Mr. Wilson noted an increase in requests for private photography sessions that allow for more creative and daring shoots.
Sunflowers have a history of inspiring artistic ventures, as seen in the 2003 British film "Calendar Girls." This film portrayed a group of middle-aged women posing for a nude calendar to raise funds for blood cancer research, with sunflowers playing a prominent role in the imagery.
