And the piece planned for sale in New York on November 18 - "undoubtedly one of his most extraordinary paintings," according to Guillaume Mallécot, director of the Contemporary Art Department Sotheby's France - has piqued the imagination of art collectors worldwide. It will be on display in Paris from October 18 to 28, before traveling to the United States.
Pierre Soulages, who will turn 102 on December 24, was born in Rodez, where a museum honoring him has been in place since 2014. On September 10, the museum welcomed its millionth visitor!
The November 18 sale in New York could break the previous record - 9.6 million euros! - set in Paris a few months ago. Soulages is the most expensive living French painter.
