Get ready to witness Leonardo da Vinci's story unfold on the big screen! According to Variety, the renowned Renaissance artist is set to be the focus of an upcoming biopic helmed by Andrew Haigh, known for his work on last year's 'All of Us Strangers.'
Based on Walter Isaacson’s celebrated biography of Leonardo, the film's scope—whether it will delve into specific aspects or encompass his entire life—remains uncertain. However, given that Universal, one of Hollywood's major studios, is backing the project, it's safe to assume that Haigh's rendition will be a substantial undertaking.
Isaacson’s 2017 release, spanning over 600 pages, comprehensively details Leonardo’s entire career, from the creation of the Mona Lisa to his groundbreaking scientific inquiries. The biography also delves into aspects such as Leonardo’s sexuality, suggesting his identification as a gay man who engaged romantically with two younger men. While the topic remains subject to scholarly discussion among art historians, there is growing consensus that Leonardo was indeed gay.
Considering Haigh's previous projects, the upcoming film may highlight Leonardo's sexuality. Haigh's portfolio includes the HBO series "Looking," centered around a group of gay men in San Francisco, as well as the 2011 drama "Weekend," which explores the intense encounter between two men.
As per Variety's report, affluent Hollywood studios have been vying for the rights to adapt Isaacson’s biography since its global release. Initially, Paramount was said to be considering a movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio, but last year, Universal acquired the project. Andrew Haigh will undertake dual roles as director and writer for this film.
