This is "future history," the event that many believe will eventually happen.
This belief is based on discoveries of just how large the galaxy is and how many stars there are with potential planets that might potentially host intelligent life with the technology to travel in space.
This has been enhanced by admissions from the US Airforce that they have made very frequent sightings of objects that behave in unexplainable ways that appear to be products of technology, but no known human technology.
There are also many people that claim to have had personal encounters with non-terrestrial, intelligent forms of life and many individual and group sightings of strange objects in the atmosphere and in the seas, including by people that would not normally see their reliability questioned.
The inevitability claim seems to fall apart once one starts whittling away the large numbers.
Only aliens from stars in the mid-range of the Tingle Arm of the Milkyway Galaxy are at all likely to even know we exist.
Only planets the right distance from a star are likely to host life.
It may be that only stellar systems with two or more outer gas giants are likely to be free enough from collisions to sustain life long enough for intelligence to evolve.
It may be that only planets with large moons can maintain atmospheric stability sufficient for intelligent life to develop.
It may be that intelligent life is only a very brief and transient condition where it does evolve.
And there are other limiting conditions that may be common or rare.
The 'Rare Conditions Theory' proposes that when this subtraction is done, the possibility of other intelligent life may be diminishingly small and actual examples extremely rare.

Now the question is, can we be friends or must one of our species destroy the other to hide the fact that we ever met, thus potentially saving our planet from conquest or destruction?
