One night many years ago while I was on Christmas holidays in Bulgaria I was staying with my wifes brother at his house in the country. He decided we would go on a trip to the hotel where we had our wedding reception. This hotel is used by locals when they go hunting in the surrounding woods. The journey was not without it's dangers because the roads were covered in snow and ice. I had my camera with me and so I took loads of pictures of the road ahead. Years later, after going through a difficult period I decided to look at these images again. I suppose they represent a state of mind that one can go through, and not always dark. There is light in my pictures and I like the sharp contrast that it has on the dark.

Dermot Ryan graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art Print from Limerick School of Art and Design and an MA in Fine Art Printmaking from Camberwell College of Arts, London and was awarded the R.K Burt prize at his final show. In 1994 he graduated with a higher diploma in teaching Art & Design from Limerick School of Art & Design and went on to teach Art part-time at various schools including Limerick Art college printmaking department from 1994 to 1995 as a printmaker in residence. He lived in Dubai and Turkey from 1997 until 2010 when he returned to live in Dublin.

He is a member and ex-director of the board of Graphic Studio Dublin. He mostly works in intaglio and relief but sometimes in lithography and monotype. He has taken part in many shows in Ireland and abroad. His work is mainly concerned with the Landscape and his response to what he has seen on his journeys around Ireland, Turkey and Bulgaria.
