"The Way Home" (2018) 印花与版画 由 Dermot Ryan

I decided to make this image of a road after a night of drinking with my brother-in-law. We went from his house in the country to the hotel where I had my wedding reception. Apart from a venue for weddings it's also a hotel used by people going hunting including the hotel owner who is also a good friend of my brother-in-law. Although we weren't driving, (I should say that the driver had not drunk any alcohol!) it was a bit dangerous because the roads were covered in snow and ice and as I had my camera with me I took a lot of photographs of the road in front of us. I have done a lot of travelling over the years but the majority of this travel was going across the Turkish/Bulgarian border.
Any road is a metaphor but a road at night has another side to it. What appeals to me is the light that illuminates the way ahead. What you can and cannot see.
This is a single copperplate etching, where I put an aquatint all over the plate, blocked certain areas that I wanted to keep white then etched the plate as much as possible in a ferric chloride acid, I probably did two aquatints on this plate and when I was happy that it was printing black enough I started burnishing back to create the light areas of the image. Burnishing is like using an eraser with black charcoal on paper, but instead it's a sharp metal tool (A Burnisher) taking away areas of the metal.
It was printed in two colours, prussian blue/black and some kind of umber.
