I was born in 1955 in Memphis, Tennessee, U.S.A., however I grew up in a suburban town outside of Boston, Massachusetts.

In high school I had the opportunity to attend the Boston Museum School’s art classes for young artists. I was taught how to create life size portraits in clay, how to cast them in plaster, how to draw in a very academic fashion from the Greek and Roman sculpture rooms of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

I went to college in the mid-west and began studying both art and philosophy with equal enthusiasm. Throughout the years my studies in philosophy have enormously contributed to the wealth of ideas and feelings in my art. In fact, I express my own unique philosophy of life through my art to such an extent that the two are inseparable.

After four years of college I was accepted by Columbia University’s School of the Arts in New York City. Naturally I was greatly impacted by the New York art scene and the cast of characters who made up the art world at that time. The atmosphere was one of excitement, of living life on the razor’s edge. I embraced New York City with all its’ good and evil.

As a student I worked with a number of well-known artists who visited The School of the Arts: Carl Andre, John Chamberlain, Hannah Wilke, Claes Oldenberg, Richard Artschwager, Clement Meadmore, Louise Bourgeois, and many others. I studied with dynamic professors at Columbia in both the art and philosophy departments.

After graduation I took a teaching position in a place about 6,000 miles away from New York City. It was an incredible adventure to live in Fairbanks, Alaska. I taught sculpture and drawing at the University of Alaska while at the same time learning so much myself about life from my students, colleages and friends in Alaska. The greatest lessons I learned on living peacefully on the Earth were from the Athabaskan Indians and the Eskimo people.

It was in Alaska that I began asking very serious questions about myself, my life, and where I fit into the universe. I began to see art as a tool for expressing anything I could feel in my heart and any concept I could think in my mind. On that basis, art became infinitely more than a decoration for a wall, table, and floor. Art became the blood of existence. The creation of art became as mysterious as the creation of the universe.

I decided to pursue another dream, that of being an art therapist and helping children to heal themselves through creativity. After 2 years of study at the University of Wisconsin and an MA in Art Therapy under my belt I took a position as a Child Art Therapist with The Good Samaritan Center for Mental Health in Downers Grove, Illinois. Gradually I branched out into working with all ages at this psychiatric facility. After earning my registration I added a very active private practice to my already busy schedule.

Six years later I returned to Fairbanks Alaska and continued my private practice in Art Therapy while working for the Tanana Chiefs as a child and adolescent therapist. I remained in Alaska for three years when I heard another call....

Now I am having a challenging adventure in Sweden. My husband and I put together my studio using a barn conversion. There I am able to concentrate on my own art, to find the truth within and around my life, and to continue to find my place in the universe. Since arriving in Sweden I have concentrated on human figure imagery containing strong emotional environments, in addition to mythological themes and psychological studies. The Invisible Women Series was born here almost 3 years ago.

I am artistically and esthetically influenced by the work of Richter, Kandinsky, Munch, Redon and Schiele and the philosophy/theology of Nietzsche and Swedenborg. I continue to offer Art Therapy consultations and workshops in Northern Europe and the USA.

A Colorful Palette: Catherine Rogers Jonsson ‘90

UW-Superior alum, Catherine Rogers Jonsson, is making her mark on the world of art as an international artist and entrepreneur.


Catherine Rogers Jonsson graduated from UW-Superior with her Master of Arts in Art Therapy in 1990. Mixing together her education, determination and entrepreneurial skills, she made the decision to become self-employed. Since she has the power to create her own career, Jonsson's work branches out to include not only being a visual artist and an art therapist, but she is also a lecturer, trainer, and a consultant. Jonsson has such a passion for art, that she was even attracted to opportunities worldwide, working mainly as a professional artist in Sweden.

Making her Mark

Working as a dedicated entrepreneur, Jonsson has managed to make a big name for herself. Since she works in the United States, as well as overseas, she has multiple exhibitions that are credited to her name in both North America and in Europe. Jonsson has also made a big impact on the Good Samaritan Hospital Center for Mental Health, located in Downers Grove, IL. It was there that she established multiple branches of treatment using art therapy, which is helping patients ranging from young children to adults. Expanding her range from the hospital, Jonsson has also opened her own private practices in the Chicago area, as well as in Alaska, which involve art psychotherapy for children and youths with specific needs.

While much of her time is devoted to marketing herself and staying globally connected through her work online, Jonsson spends the majority of her day working on her art. At her farm-home in Sweden, she has the unique opportunity of working on the second floor of a barn, which is where her art studio is located. She will soon be recognized in Stockholm, Sweden at one of her solo art exhibitions, which will take place at Galleri Hagman in November 2012.

A Love for the Arts

Jonsson's variety of work opportunities provides many chances for her to connect with people and to aid them in their struggles. One of her favorite aspects of the job is having the ability to help people heal and rebuild their lives by learning how to express their emotions through art. She enjoys the opportunity create her own way of explaining the abstract aspects of life through her various illustrations. Her passion for the arts is what encouraged her to become a certified art therapist as well as a credentialed professional member of the American Art Therapy Association.

No End in Sight

For the majority of people, their goal is to find a career doing something that they are passionate about. How bad could it be going to work every day when it is a job they truly love to do? Jonsson was able to not only meet this life goal, but she is prepared to take it to the next level. When asked about her future plans, Jonsson shares, "I hope to continue offering my art therapy workshops around the world and showing my art work, too. I don't plan on ever retiring." Jonsson has been able to find work in a field she loves so much, that it is less a job for her than it is a way of life. There are no limits to how long she will be working.

Helpful Career Advice

Though challenges may arise, as well as some unexpected opportunities, Jonsson has a piece of advice that she tries to live by. She says, "Throw your hat in the ring and give it go!" Living up to her own advice, Jonsson has certainly expanded her horizons by trying new things, taking some risks, and eventually becoming an international entrepreneur. A famous author, Louise Hay, also offers words of wisdom, encouraging people to "listen to your intuition." Jonsson took this phrase to heart, and she feels that when she follows this advice she is able to make the best decisions for herself. Though there is no way of saying for sure where she will be in the years to come, it is safe to say that Jonsson will still be using art to pursue a career she loves.

The Healing Children through Creativity: Art Therapy Training Workshop introduces the basic principles and practice of art therapy with emotionally, behaviorally, developmentally and medically challenged children and adolescents. This two-day workshop blends theories and experiential exercises offering a thorough introduction in the therapeutic use of visual art as a powerful treatment modality.

This training event reviews various topics within the field of art therapy as it pertains to their particular group. Covered are such topics as the history of art therapy, important evaluation techniques used by art therapists and case studies with client/patient artworks in power-point presentations. Additional training in working creatively with children traumatized by war is featured.

This is an experiential, theoretical and process-oriented workshop.
As a participant you are invited to draw, paint and sculpt a variety of art therapeutic interventions that help clients and patients identify and express their thoughts, feelings, conflicts, strengths and increase their self-esteem and coping skills.
