Charles Ford

To most of his admirers known as just "Charles", perhaps from his distinctive way of signing his paintings only by his first name, it was in the summer of 1995 that Charles Ford (b.1948) landed for the first time in Sweden.

Six years later Charles' Swedish Collection 1995 -2001 marks one of his most creative and exciting periods as a painter, a pledge he took on in 1978, then 30 years old, when he promised himself to pursue a lifetime commitment to his art - and never has looked back.

Since first arriving Charles has spent approximately two thirds of his time in Sweden and with an astonishing discipline and mesmerizing creativity has now completed a remarkable 319 original paintings here (by 9/2001).

Although Charles regularly returns to the United States, to his hometown, Baltimore - or to Seattle or New York, where he also likes to live and paint - he has always found a reason to return to Sweden.

We now know why! To the delight of Charles' growing number of Swedish admirers and collectors this great American artist has found a consistency and harmony within his Swedish work which has given him the necessary impetus to return.

Whilst there is no lack of significant paintings from Charles' great American collection, for example, "Road to Ochre", "Mandolin player", "Teacher", "A Bathroom view", "Holy Faces", "African Mood" and many others, undoubtedly some of Charles' finest and most divine pieces have been created in Sweden.

What a loss, for example, had we not experienced the mystical beauty of "Monika", or the complete peacefulness of "Nirvana", the graceful seduction of "Cleopatra", the sensuous heat of "Indian Summer", the romantic ambience of "Cuban Serenade", the sophisticated symmetry of "In the Red Armchair", or the harmony of "Colour of Life", only to mention just a few of many great works made in Sweden.
