Kurt Donald Cobain (February 20, 1967 - April 5, 1994) was an American singer-songwriter, musician and artist. He was the vocalist, rhythm, lead guitarist and main songwriter of the band Nirvana. Cobain's compositions extended the thematic traditions of mainstream rock music through his anxiety-inducing songwriting and anti-establishment personality. He has often been hailed as the spokesperson for Generation X and is considered one of the most influential musicians in alternative rock history.

Cobain formed the band Nirvana with Krist Novoselic and Aaron Burckhard in 1987 as part of the Seattle music scene later known as grunge. They released their first album called 'Bleach' in 1989 from the independent record label Sub Pop. After being signed to DGC Records, the band's second album 'Nevermind' was released in 1991 and they achieved groundbreaking success with "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Following the success of 'Nevermind', Nirvana has been labeled the 'flag-busting band' of Generation X, and Cobain has been described as 'the spokesperson for a generation'. However, he was often offended and angered by the frequent media attention of Cobain's own personal problems and the public misinterpretation of his message. Nirvana challenged the audience with their latest studio album 'In Utero' (1993).

In the last years of his life, Cobain struggled with drug addiction, his reputation and image, as well as the pressures surrounding him and his wife, Courtney Love. In addition, his illness and stomachaches were other factors he struggled with in his last years. On April 8, 1994, Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home. In the official statement, it was announced that he shot himself in the head with a hunting rifle. The conditions he was in at the time of his death have become a subject of frequent discussion by the public. Nirvana has sold 25 million albums in the US alone, and more than 50 million worldwide.
