One breast is rendered in shimmering silver with a golden nipple, while the other is painted in reverse—gold with a silver nipple. The sun, a radiant yellow against the pink sky, serves as the central source of light, drawing the viewer's eye to the meeting point of these two forms.
What makes this piece even more intriguing is its transformation under UV light. The yellow sun turns a glowing light green, while the pink sky shifts to a darker orange, casting the breasts as darker, almost shadowy shapes against this luminous background. This effect not only changes the visual dynamics of the piece but also introduces a conceptual layer referencing J.R.R. Tolkien’s famous quote about the green sun. Tolkien mused that it is not difficult to imagine a green sun, but creating a world where such a sun is natural, even inevitable, requires much more creativity and depth. In this artwork, the green sun under UV light hints at an alternate reality, one where the divine feminine is central, and the act of creation is attributed to a Woman.
This conceptual layer ties into the artist’s intent to challenge traditional narratives found in many dominant world religions, which often depict a Male God creating a Male as the first human. Here, the artist imagines a world where the divine creator is a Woman, and the first act of creation is the emergence of Woman herself. The transformation of the sun into a green orb under UV light becomes a symbolic act of entering this alternate world—a world where this narrative is not only possible but inevitable.
The title "Creation of Woman" encapsulates this reinterpretation, making the artwork both a visual and conceptual exploration of alternative creation myths and the reimagining of divine power.
Anxana, born in 1980 in Moscow, Russia, is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores profound themes of body, female sexuality, womanhood, and emotional development. Her artistic journey began in the realm of photography, where she honed her skills through formal education in various prestigious institutions, including Fotodepartament in Saint Petersburg, and the Royal Academy of Art in the Netherlands. However, as she delved deeper into the world of art, Anxana’s practice evolved from traditional photography to encompass video-art, performance, and ultimately installation and painting.
Anxana’s preferred mediums include acrylics on canvas or cardboard, often made with fluorescent paint, and a variety of mixed media techniques such as installation, graphics, and collage, where she combines these diverse techniques to create immersive, multi-sensory experiences. Her work often manifests in bold, bright neon colors.
As a self-taught painter, Anxana’s work is characterized by its seismic exploration of female identity and the emotional landscape of womanhood. Her use of glowing neon paint adds a vibrant, almost electric energy to her compositions, symbolizing the dynamic and often intense emotional experiences.
Throughout her career, Anxana has sought to deepen her practice through various workshops and residencies. She studied collage under Olga Averyanova, the head of the Photography Department at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, and trained in installation art with Eldar Ganeev at the Moscow School of Contemporary Art (MSCA), further expanding her artistic vocabulary.
Anxana’s work is a compelling blend of visual and conceptual elements, reflecting her continuous evolution as an artist and her commitment to exploring the complexities of female experience through her distinctive, vibrant style.
Currently resides in Moscow, Russia.
