Cabot Tower in St. John's, Newfoundland holds significant historical importance as a symbol of human communication advancements and maritime tragedy.
Constructed in 1897 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's arrival in North America, the tower also served as a functional lighthouse until 1962. However, its most notable role came in the early 20th century with the advent of wireless telegraphy.

The tower was the location of the Marconi Wireless Station, where on December 12, 1901, Guglielmo Marconi and his team successfully received the first trans-Atlantic wireless message. This historic event was a monumental achievement in global communication, connecting the Old World with the New in a way that was previously unimaginable. The message, a simple series of Morse code dots and dashes, was sent from Poldhu, Cornwall in the United Kingdom and read: "V-I-C, V-I-C, V-I-C" (representing the letter "V" for victory, and "C" for the Roman numeral for 100, symbolizing the 100-mile distance the signal had traveled). This successful transmission paved the way for future developments in wireless communication, including the critical role it would play in maritime and global affairs.

Tragically, Cabot Tower was also the first radio station to pick up the distress signals from the RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912. Operator J.G. Reid received the SOS calls from the sinking ship and relayed the urgent message to nearby vessels and rescue services. Despite the heroic efforts of the wireless operators and rescue teams, the Titanic's tragic fate was sealed, with more than 1,500 lives lost in the icy waters of the North Atlantic.
