Ambie Abano
A licensed architect, Ambie Abaño abandoned the practice in favor of being a visual artist. From painting, her shifting to printmaking brought her to an encounter with and exploration of the medium which led to the creation of portraits and figures in mixed media works, sculptures and installations, always originating from traditional printmaking techniques. “Rather than holding an expression captive, her portraits insist upon the phenomena on which the moment the person comes forth as an individual.” Siddhartha Perez
Among her achievements include the Grand Prize in the Painting Category in the Art Association of the Philippines Open Art Competition in 1987 and the Grand Prize in the Philippine Art Awards in 2006. She is the first recipient of the Alliance Française de Manille - Philippine Artist Residency Program (AFM-PARP) which brought her to Paris for a three-month residency for further training in various intaglio techniques under Françoise Bicaut at Atelier La Taille Douce. She is a 2012 grantee of the Asian Cultural Council in New York where she attended classes in lithography under Devraj Dakoji at the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop (RBPMW) and a studio residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) in Brooklyn.
Abaño was President of the Philippine Association of Printmakers, Inc. from 2006-2012, a member of the Philippine Committee Asian Artists, Inc., and a faculty member at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts. She has participated in numerous exhibitions in the Philippines and the Asia Region and is also actively involved in organizing art related projects locally.
