L'uomo vive un atto di esistenza globale che trova coinvolti tanto se stesso quanto l'universo, in un unico ingranaggio di fenomeni. Lo spazio e il tempo non sono altro che una illusione percettiva prodotta dal cervello umano.

Ma.. il tempo, cos'è? Aristotele definì il tempo «il numero del movimento secondo il prima e il poi».
Nella sua famosa meditazione nelle Confessioni Agostino decise che il tempo «è un'estensione dell'anima» .
Come osservò Agostino, il passato non esiste più ed il futuro non esiste ancora. Il presente è fuggevole ed alla stregua di un punto di fuga di un paradosso Zenoniano può essere suddiviso all'infinito.
Nel momento in cui lo misuriamo esso è già passato. L'espressione latina, Tempus fugit, coglie bene il paradosso, giacchè il verbo riflette al contempo presente e passato: nello stesso momento «il tempo fugge» ed «il tempo è fuggito».
Poiché l'uomo non controlla né il suo inizio né la sua fine, egli non trova che la complementarietà e l’assillo dell’incertezza. In un linguaggio più filosofico il tempo è radicato nella potenza della materia e la materia è inintellegibile all'uomo. Ragion per cui la questione del tempo riflette la questione dell'esistenza umana.
