I have painted many different things, but I have always been interested in people. I was drawn to portraiture. I wondered why. I think it comes from how I perceive the world, how I perceive people. Every single person, even the seemingly repulsive one, is a separate world, which if it goes out, along with it a unique way of looking, feeling, thinking.... Consciousness itself is something unusual, amazing. SF literature also sometimes takes up the problem of consciousness, which now with the advent of advanced AI is entering the public debate. Specialists wonder whether artificial intelligence will possess self-awareness. It is possible that even very advanced AI surpassing human intelligence many times over will not achieve self-awareness. The fact that we have it is something extraordinary. We are extraordinary.I paint my paintings in such a way that I try to show this extraordinariness, because the face alone does not convey it. It needs color to show this mystery. It needs different stains, lines, etc. Facial features alone are not enough.
What we say and do trivializes us rather than shows us to the outside world. We don't know how to communicate or "read" others. When we pick up a good book we are enthralled by the world created and think to ourselves, this writer must have an amazing inner world. And yet he showed only a tiny fragment of himself in this book. And what about people who do not have this gift? Theirs we cannot get to know from this side. We will know him only by what he says and what he does. And that, after all, is a smokescreen.
