Throughout its centuries-old history and up to the beginning of the twentieth century, Minsk was a small provincial city. In proportion to its status, the urban environment with its uncomplicated architecture was formed. However, as significant historical and cultural events took place on urban lands, monuments of monumental architecture appeared in Minsk, as in other cities of the future Belarusian state. One of such monuments that have come down to us from the depths of centuries was a Large (cold) synagogue.
The construction of the synagogue, completed in 1570 on the banks of the Nemiga River, marked a high public appreciation of the role of the Jewish diaspora in the formation of the ethnos of the future titular nation and at the same time recognition of the right of this diaspora to free worship of Judaism in its own sacred home. According to this assessment, the Jewish community of Minsk, without skimping on costs, erected its spiritual building in the late Middle Ages.
