Ahmedabad-based artist Narendra Raghunath studied Greek and Indian philosophy and mythology before coming out with a series of works now on display at a solo exhibition at Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra here.
“Through my art I have tried to explore the Almighty through Eastern and Western philosophy and mythology. Spiritualism is a sensitive and dangerous subject and I had to conduct an intense study. It took me two years of study to complete my work for the present exhibition,” says Narendra, who held his first exhibition in the Capital in 2006.
“When we set up a relationship, be it personal, notional or social, the foundation is faith. We build society, religion, nation, education, knowledge, innovations and development out of faith. Strangely, in spite of being the foundation for all material development, faith is not a material thing. Most developments that have materialised so far are contradicting and conflicting in nature and our efforts and energies are spent on untangling these conflicts. So I take collective human faith of supplementing or complementing our inability or ability for an artistic exploration,” says the artist. Interestingly, he was earning his livelihood in the corporate world before he decided to be part of the creative world. He worked in the toy department of National Institute of Design at Ahmedabad for three years and then as a textbook designer at Indira Gandhi National Open University. In 2006, he became a full-fledged artist. The exhibition is on up to this Friday.

Urban realities - The Hindu
The Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat is holding a group exhibition of Surendra Karthyayan, an artist from Trivandrum and Narendra Raghunath, an artist from Calicut but based in Ahmedabad. The exhibition is on till 15 May.
The exhibition revolves around the idea of the urban landscape and makes extra sense for the chaos that Bangalore has come to be. Some of the paintings try to capture the pandemonium of the city we live in while others subtly celebrate the dancing lights strewn over the fluid carpet of the river or the hatched lines made by the vertical, horizontal as well as curvilinear growth of the expanding city. Rivers which are an integral part of a city and a civilization, encapsulate and balance the aggressive and harsh realities of living the ‘urban dream'.
His work is inspired from art and science. Lines in Indian art, be it folk art, murals, kalamkari paintings or others — are very important. As he delved deeper into this conceptual framework, he realised that “lines are omnipresent and can integrate a dichotomy of ideas. When applied to a city, like Bangalore for instance, it implies that Bangalore can accept or reject migrants, create a melting pot of diversity or expulse the unwanted, it can give its people freedom or can snatch it away… This is what I have tried to communicate through my paintings,” explains Narendra. “Story books and illustrative magazines were the early art forms that I was exposed to and they had a catalytic effect on me. I delved deeper into art,” says Narendra. Faculty of Arts and Humanities, CEPT University (Ahmedabad), he believes that there is no end to learning and no right age to start reinventing oneself. In 2002, he finally turned a page and became a full time artist.Since then there has been no looking back.
Those interested can visit the gallery between 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on all days. Call: 09427012724, 09746444512.

Posted on: 13 May 2010

In the beginning was the dot
Apeksha Rao / DNAWednesday, May 12, 2010 9:37 IST
Bangalore: He’s originally from Kerala, lives in Ahmedabad and used to love Bangalore, though on this visit, during which he is showcasing his works at Chitrakala Parishath, the city has disappointed artist Narendra Raghunath. “Somehow, I don’t feel like I’m in Bangalore. I see trees being cut everywhere. This is not the Bangalore I knew.” he says.
The exhibition featuring nine of the artist’s paintings is on at CKP till May 15. Explaining the central theme linking the nine paintings, Raghunath says: “For a visual artist, ‘form’ is of prime importance. The origin of all form is a dot, which is dimensionless. Two such dimensionless points join to form a line, which then has a dimension. A line has many manifestations, which I’ve been exploring through my art.”
Raghunath has refrained from bestowing titles on any of the paintings. “Every individual is made of several layers. So is a painting. There are endless ways in which one can interpret a painting. By giving abstract paintings a name, I would restrict your point of view to one thought. I do not want that,” he explains.
Using only vertical, horizontal and reclining lines, these paintings capture different moods of a city. In some, a city’s Spartan aggression comes through, while some paintings bring out its nurturing side. Yet others discuss its chaotic, vertical growth.
Talking about changing urban landscapes in his paintings, the artist comments on the much talked about concrete jungle phenomenon. “That’s reality. There is nothing to crib about. We need to accept it. We should look at it as an opening up of opportunities. Although it is high time we though and reacted smart,” he says.
Meanwhile, Raghunath’s friend and international artist SurendranKarthyayan, who’s works are also on display in the same gallery, has a completely different take on this.
He believes that nature is being delineated by human activity and this concerns him. “I’m trying to elevate human minds through my art,” says the Kerala- based artist. Point out that blues and greens dominate his color palette and the aritst says: “That is the proof of my affection towards nature.”In all his works, tiny flowers, seeds and leaves transform into shapes of prominence. The Lalit Kala Akademi Award winner’s paintings in this exhibition revolve around the relationship between nature and tourism.

Of dots and lines
Jyothi Raghuram First Published : 10 May 2010 05:52:56 AM IST
Sculptor-painter-academicsoftware professional barely sums up the persona of Narendra Raghunath, whose maiden solo painting exhibition is on at the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath.
Narendra’s exhibition evokes curiosity for several reasons. For one, it has no nomenclature.
None of the nine works have a caption either. Many times, while viewing abstract paintings, the captions limit the viewer’s interpretation of the work.In Narendra’s case, his presence gives the lead to each painting.
He briefly explains the concept of the work, and leaves one to mull over the imagery. And it is then that his paintings become representational, communicating at the visual and emotional level. And herein lies Narendra’s artistic skills.
Another unique aspect of his works is the idiom. The series uses only lines—vertical, horizontal and reclining, with not a single brush stroke to soften the effect. The starkness, despite the liberal use of bright hues including orange and yellow, derived through the sweep of wooden pieces, communicates as much as the lines, the theme being the urban lifescape, particularly its chaotic, stifling, and vertical growth.
“Mathematically, a point is very interesting because it has no dimensions. But when two dimension-less points are put together, it becomes a line with a form”, reasons Narendra, who is doing his post-graduation in Art Design and Communication at the Centre for Environment Planning and Technology University, Ahmedabad, on lines.
The lines and patches in the series of paintings connote the urban situation with its boundaries, barriers etc, while also trying to glean urban beauty.
The mid-size paintings, along with three large canvasses, capture the city skyline, its chaotic and cluttered life, and its literal night-time reflection, the white-red-black centrepiece riveting in its beauty of form, colour, and geometry.
Narendra is headed to Belgrade, Serbia, this July, to present his performance art installation at the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space.
Also on display at the same gallery is Surendran P Karthyayan paintings of predominantly blue and green in acrylic, synonymous not only with nature, but of Kerala, his native state.
The exhibition is on till May 15.
