Grounded in both old and new traditions, I first trained in Connecticut as an Illustrator, Graphic Designer, and Muralist before heading west to pursue a M.F.A. at Idaho State University in 1987. There, I learned to allow myself the freedom to chase my own vision and let the elements of my past collide with creative results...
I have always responded to the technique, history, finish, and the almost surreal mood and lighting of old painting. I have also been influenced by the fresh approach of Modern Art, as well as the skill of many Illustrators. "Pan Imagery" grew from the use of painting as a way to reconcile my various interests and experiences as an artist to a contemporary context. Luck was also a factor, as it was the "happy accident" of some artwork falling to the floor that launched this series- which also strives for subtlety, precision, and a "pre-fab" appearance.
With Pan Imagery I'm playing with images, references, and techniques that are derived from many genres, to create interesting combinations of elements, open interpretations, poetic effects, or personal meaning. My source material for this work is often Art History, the media, memory, or just a spontaneous interaction with paint... I merely enjoy creating art to free-associate with.
