An artist, Sarah, let me use her rug when I set up a still life. The roses I bought the morning I set this up, and I developed the painting from these two major components, keeping the central pattern of the rug a little off-center in order to balance the more complex patterns reflected in the silver of the pitcher and larger grouping of roses on the upper right side. The background is a blend of transparent orange and titanium white creating the sense of morning sunlight on a wall. The deep blues in the rug, as well as the reds and ochres, are echoed in the two vessels and the roses themselves. Oil on linen, 18x18 inches (45x45 cm) this work is framed in a gold plain-air frame (wood), and because it's painted on a 1.5 inch-deep canvas, stands an inch off the wall, an effect that adds to its dramatic impact. Framed dimensions: 24x24 in (61x61 cm). Signed and dated in verso, this painting ships with a digitally-registered Certificate of Authenticity.
