Article
Since the end of her baccalaureate in visual arts in 2002, Valerie Beaulieu is a artist of Beauport which is dissociated by its techniques of assembly and the use of uncommon recovered materials. Sculptor-Entournilleuse, she turns of thousands of wire to create sculptures and installations inspired by organic structures.
"All starts in the scrap merchant, the employees know me well and put me some parts on side. In the large boxes, those where copper and aluminium are classified, I excavate, I seek, I dirtied and skins me the hands. Surrounded by the odour of metal, the old metal, my eyes scan the clusters of scrap in the search of materials. Not any, only those which speak to me, those which call me and ask me to touch them. Each time I crack in front of wire; large heavy cables, smallest rolled up, the large thin ones gotten mixed up... Neither without knowing nor to envisage, I often take them all. Such of the objects of collection, I leave them well in sight. I look at them and touch them. I compare them, gather them and classify them. I fold them, roll them and twist them. My visits in the scrap merchants are inevitable sources of inspiration. On each return, my hands swarm and I populate my world of new forms. Curiously flexible objects, structures integrating space, answering themselves mutually and evolving/moving according to characteristics' of their components. Each one is defined by its materials and inspires by new works. The process of creation is exponential; the possibilities of assemblies multiply with each discovery.
The more recent use of silicone was one of these marvellous and surprising discovered. Slackness and rigid, milky and flexible, this matter allows repeated mouldings and uncommon assemblies. Added to the metal wire which never are stuck nor welded, silicone adds to the multiple possibilities and makes the forms more malleable, more intrigued. A random sample of materials and assemblies, the instinctive world of the vegetable structures takes invading accents. In a dash of life and movement, ordered or random structures are spread."
