Internationally renowned artist Jean-Michel Othoniel has been selected to create a stained glass window for the Saint-Sernin Basilica in Toulouse, as part of its extensive restoration. The project, blending contemporary art with the basilica's historic essence, is funded by the city and a private patron, reflecting a significant cultural investment.

In Toulouse, the Saint-Sernin Basilica is undergoing extensive restoration work, and as part of this, a new stained glass window is being crafted by the internationally acclaimed artist Jean-Michel Othoniel. The Mayor of Toulouse, Jean-Luc Moudenc, has entrusted Othoniel and the Ateliers Loire to create a rose window for the basilica's entrance facade. This decision was made following a consultation process conducted by the local government, which included a jury of experts and elected officials.

The Saint-Sernin Basilica, a gem of heritage, is currently the focus of a large-scale renovation project led by the city council. The aim is to restore the beauty of this remarkable monument, which is listed as a World Heritage site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela.

Since late 2022, the restoration work has concentrated on the west facade of the building, including the main entrance. To enhance the western facade, the local government initiated a consultation for the creation of a stained glass window for the rose window and the small bay above it. The project also includes protective measures against thermal shocks for the Cavaillé-Coll organ, a historic monument situated in front of the stained glass window.

Jean-Michel Othoniel's chosen design, known for his glass bead artworks like the one at the Palais-Royal metro station in Paris, represents a blend of contemporary art and the historical identity of the basilica. This project is funded by the Toulouse city council and a private patron, AG2R La Mondiale Foundation, with a budget of 600,000 euros. The overall restoration of the basilica, costing 3.3 million euros, is financed by the city council with contributions from the state and regional authorities.
