About the author
Laurent Chabrillat, painter, draftsman and photographer, was introduced to drawing and painting by his father, an influence that marked him deeply. Quickly attracted by the Impressionist painters, he fell under their spell and immersed himself in their universe. He multiplies the drawings to perfect his observation, his technique, the work of forms, volumes, shadows and light.
Even once engaged in professional life, Laurent does not abandon his pencils and brushes. He continues to create alongside his main activity. Meetings with other artists enrich his work and allow him to progress. Step by step, his painting becomes structured and gains in consistency. As the saying goes: "it is by forging that one becomes a blacksmith".
The year 2018 is a decisive turning point for Laurent, who fully embarks on his passion. He presents his creations at individual exhibitions, national fairs and in galleries.
Polymorphic artist at heart, Laurent expresses through his painting his feelings and his need to explore different paths, different styles, but always with his own artistic signature.
Through figuration and black felt-tip drawing, he obsessively seeks light. The other colors are not necessary, because when the black is well placed, the magic happens. The powerful contrasts are revealed and the light springs, giving birth to timeless and contemporary works. Sometimes, a few touches of yellow, orange or blue come to add relief to his paintings when it seems necessary to him.
However, Laurent also needs to let go and feel free in his actions. Oil, acrylic, inks and oil pastels accompany him on this artistic journey. Like a jazzman, he ventures into the non-figurative, even the abstract. Freedom of expression, spontaneity and the interpretation of an unknown subject or landscape then take their place in the realization of his paintings. The material creates relief and pushes him to reinterpret a place or a person even further.
Linocut and monotypes bring him closer to the world of sculptors thanks to the texture and the use of specific materials. Finally, with digital, Laurent takes another path where shapes and colors become an infinite source of inspiration.
