Les aquarelles de Codogno à Montegrotto Terme - « Bellunesi nel mondo » avril 2004
Valéry Codogno naît à Ougrée dans la périphérie industrielle de Liège en 1952, dans une famille dont les parents originaires de la Vénétie ont émigré en Belgique juste après la deuxième guerre mondiale, et ont porté et maintenu avec eux les valeurs et les racines de la culture vénitienne.
Valéry Codogno, après s’être diplômé avec grande distinction en industrial design à l’institut des beaux-arts de St Luc (Liège) et avoir aussi fréquenté l’académie de Boisfort (Bruxelles), s’est intégré comme designer en Belgique. Cependant, après avoir exposé en Italie en 1983 à Asolo dans la région de Venise, il est particulièrement touché par le charme irrésistible du paysage , de la lumière et de la lagune de Venise et en subit une attraction qui le porte à parcourir les traces de ses parents, les lieux où ils sont nés, où ils ont grandis, et d’où ils ont été arrachés à cause des problèmes dramatiques qui ont tenaillé l’Italie d’après guerre.
Depuis lors, Codogno a vécu une double appartenance : une, belge, le pays où il est né, a grandit, et a cultivé au contact d’artistes belges avec une certaine « introversion » nordique, la passion pour la technique de l’aquarelle. L’autre, italienne, le pays de ces racines, qui a redonné couleur, parole, et vie à une certaine solitude typique des pays du nord.
Cette duplicité se reflète aussi dans son travail : la précision du trait rappelle un certain calligraphisme nordique, alors que son emploi de la couleur évoque les écoles du tonalisme vénète. Le journal de l’expérience visuelle de Codogno s’étend sur une saison artistique d’une vingtaine d’années, faite d’aquarelles de certaines villes Vénètes, Venise en particulier, en se proposant d’exprimer avec cette technique la transparence de l’atmosphère humide de la lagune et de la plaine Vénète, cherchant de mémoriser les émotions de la contemplation à travers ses peintures.
Giorgio Segato a écrit en parlant de lui : « Particulièrement belles sont ses vues d’Asolo, de Monfumo, du bassin de Saint Marc, reprises soit de la Giudecca, soit des Zattere, soit de la Piazzetta à différents moments de variations chromatiques qui se fondent très lentement à l’aube et se distinguent de la tombée de la nuit, pour revenir se fondre dans la magie des voiles bleus de cobalt que le coucher de soleil laisse derrière lui, dans les vapeurs de brumes du soir et de la nuit, desquelles surgissent à l’aube, les rouges vénitiens, l’or des mosaïques, les verts des coupoles, les éclats éblouissants des marines. »
Il a exposé souvent en Italie dans ces vingt dernières années. Parmi les dernières distinctions, il y a le prix du public et le second prix du jury de la dernière biennale Européenne de l’aquarelle d’Albignasego(PD) 2002, petite ville qui hébergera bientôt l’unique musée italien de l’aquarelle dans lequel il y aura une de ses œuvres.
Codogno sent que son véritable interlocuteur culturel est constitué non pas seulement par le public belge ou italien mais surtout par ceux qui, comme lui, ont suivi le même parcours d’émigration sans jamais perdre le contact avec la terre d’origine. Son message est adressé aux italiens qui, comme lui, ressentent le même sens de double appartenance. L’artiste a exposé au palais des congrès de Montegrotto terme du 10 au 21 décembre 2003.

Atmosphère, lumière et transparences sont les principaux éléments esthétiques de l’œuvre de Valéry Codogno exposée ces jours-ci dans la petite salle de la revue Stile arte de la « Città antiquaria » de Brescia.
Codogno, artiste particulièrement sensible, exalte avec son pinceau les qualités techniques de l’aquarelle dans le signe de la bonne tradition, en la caractérisant d’une poésie suave de romantiques atmosphères paysagistes.
Venise devient, dans ce contexte, le centre d’une dialectique visuelle dans laquelle on parcourt et on pénètre l’univers de la mémoire exalté par le lyrisme raffiné de l’art.
C’est le regard intime d’un amoureux de la nature et d’un chantre enchanté de lieux et de petits détails, qui nous entraînent dans un voyage dont l’itinéraire est tracé par l’empreinte indélébile et éternelle de la beauté.
Valéry Codogno poursuit cette dernière comme dernier rempart de son rêve où la réalité constitue seulement l’origine d’un discours qui, à travers son regard, tend à viser droit au cœur.
Le fameux critique d’art Giorgio Segato, a écrit en parlant de lui : Les aquarelles de Valéry Codogno, plus que réalités objectales, cueillent et enregistrent l’air dans lequel se reflètent les choses du réel, l’émeraude de la végétation, la topaze des terres, l’aigue-marine du ciel et de la lagune, les saphirs profonds de fraîcheurs marines.

La qualité fondamentale de l’aquarelle est d’évoquer la vision et la mémoire de la réalité par des atmosphères exceptionnellement limpides et transparentes d’extraordinaire légèreté et de délicate évocation sentimentale. Il y a habituellement chez l’aquarelliste, une tendresse contemplative très particulière, une sensibilité aiguë pour les moindres variations atmosphériques et pour les correspondances entre humeurs intimes et milieu, et entre manifestation psychique et nature. C’est pour cette raison que l’aquarelle est la technique privilégiée pour la réalisation d’un journal et pour l’évocation de la mémoire : elle dissout et fond, dans le geste rapide du coup de pinceau, l’émotion visuelle et le sentiment, la perception physique et la résonance spirituelle, la réalité et le rêve, l’expérience et le souvenir, en exerçant la capacité –faite de sensibilité à la fois innée et acquise, du regard et du coup de patte – de pénétration et de compréhension des qualités de la lumière, saisie dans sa gamme infinie de transparences lumineuses et de densités marines.
Valéry Codogno, peintre autodidacte de profession designer, a toujours été en contact avec le monde des arts, notamment avec des artistes et des aquarellistes belges. Attiré très tôt par les possibilités d’enregistrement et de modulation atmosphérique et émotionnelle dans les formes légères que cette technique permet et exalte, ses aquarelles me font penser au très beau vers de Giovanni Pascoli repris dans le titre et particulièrement apte à évoquer l’efficacité expressive qui caractérise cette technique dont l’apprentissage n’est facile qu’en apparence. En effet, cette technique requiert de longues années d’exercice attentif et une prédisposition naturelle de la sensibilité pour cueillir l’impalpable jeu de diaphragmes transparents, les cristaux de l’air qui modulent ombres et lumière, qui enflamment, décomposent et répandent les couleurs qui respirent sur la nature, la végétation, les fleurs, les eaux et le ciel.
Les aquarelles de Valéry Codogno, plus que réalités objectales, cueillent et enregistrent l’air dans lequel se reflètent les choses du réel, l’émeraude de la végétation, la topaze des terres, l’aigue-marine du ciel et de la lagune, les saphirs profonds de fraîcheurs marines. Il sait rendre avec rapidité magistrale la magie et l’enchantement des atmosphères, les variations d’intensités lumineuses, d’incidences solaires sur le corps vaporeux, avec un coup de pinceau ample et liquide, qui donne tout de suite le sens des choses et des lieux, dans les résonances provoquées dans les chambres du cœur. Spontanéité et esprit de finesse caractérisent la technique de Codogno qui enrichit l’expérience considérable mûrie dans le temps avec des inventions formelles, en découpant de petits détails de la vision (murs avec ombres, reflets, phrasés lumineux) et de surcroît en variant les formats et en préférant des vues longues et étroites, souvent horizontales, quelques fois verticales, qui obligent une vision ‘prolongée’ donnant un imprinting plus efficace, et donc, capable de majeures sollicitations de la mémoire et de la participation de la pensée et de l’émotion, en s’approchant de façon vraiment surprenante à la clausule musicale (des touches jamais trop longues ni trop brèves, ni trop pales ni trop chargées) à laquelle il me semble pouvoir rapprocher son sens de la mesure, de la couleur chantante, de l’air vibrant et à la fois pénétrant.
Une des ses motivations de base est liée au besoin technique et culturel de se libérer de l’hyperréalisme du dessin pratiqué dans le design, reconquérant le niveau de la vision poétique, amoureuse non des objets mais du jeu toujours mystérieux des résonances et consonances chromatiques d’une réalité qui se fond dans les atmosphères.
Particulièrement belles sont ses vues d’Asolo, de Monfumo, du bassin de Saint Marc, reprises soit de la Giudecca, soit des Zattere, soit de la Piazzetta à différents moments de variations chromatiques qui se fondent très lentement à l’aube et se distinguent de la tombée de la nuit, pour revenir se fondre dans la magie des voiles bleus de cobalt que le coucher de soleil laisse derrière lui, dans les vapeurs de brumes du soir et de la nuit, desquelles surgissent à l’aube, les rouges vénitiens, l’or des mosaïques, les verts des coupoles, les éclats éblouissants des marines. Le coup de pinceau est dégagé, agile et liquide, sans astuces de contrepoint à taches : la couleur est contrôlée, calibrée dans sa substance et sa transparence, la définition de l’atmosphère et de l’ambiance est immédiate, sans repentir, comme un épanchement sur papier humide d’une émotion visuelle qui devient geste et couleur.
Il faut de la connaissance, de la sensibilité et une intelligence raffinée du coup de pinceau heureux pour obtenir des résultats d’une aussi claire capacité évocatrice, fruit d’une « sensorialité »à l’écoute, riche et légère, naturaliste et à la fois intellectuelle. Valéry Codogno a sans aucun doute ces qualités rares.

Un parcours professionnel de designer, a conduit Valéry Codogno (Liège, Belgique, 1952) à se poser une question qui aurait ensuite influencé entièrement son cheminement expressif : A quel moment une illustration hyperréaliste se transforme en œuvre d’art ? A quel moment le transfert d’une donnée objective sur papier, obtenu avec grande habilité, cède le pas à « quelque chose » en plus qui appartient au domaine de la poésie, à l’évocation subjective, au fait émotionnel ?
Les réponses possibles prennent forme lorsque, grâce à l’exercice de sa profession, il rejoint une bonne capacité technique illustrative. C’est alors que Codogno éprouve le besoin d’explorer l’autre versant du dessin, de la peinture : celui qui, à travers la sensibilité du regard, réussit à saisir des atmosphères uniques, à pénétrer dans la substance des choses, à capturer les émotions qu’elle suscite.
Après une participation à une exposition de nus, organisée à Asolo (Vénétie) en 1983, Codogno décide de s’arrêter en Italie, terre d’origine de ses parents, qui l’attire irrésistiblement. Après les premiers lavis à l’encre sépia, dans un style très proche du « vedutismo »Vénète, il effectue un choix précis dans la direction de l’aquarelle, technique qui lui permet de « se libérer » de l’hyperréalisme froid du design, en expérimentant un rendu de la vision plus doux, plus approprié à la dimension évocatrice de la mémoire et du sentiment.
Fils d’une tradition nordique plus attentive depuis toujours (du moins, par rapport celle italienne) aux valeurs expressives de l’aquarelle, il révèle dans son travail une adhésion à des modèles importants comme Folon et les grands surréalistes. Ce n’est pas un refus tout court du fait naturel, du figuratif qu’il abandonne difficilement : Il s’agit plutôt d’une recherche d’équilibre idéal entre les atmosphères liquides et à la fois vibrantes du paysage dans lesquelles les modulations de couleurs et de lumière tendent vers une fusion presque abstraite et le figuratif qui apparaît parfois seulement dans des petits détails, mais se détache grâce à la précision du trait et à une définition chromatique contrôlée.
Codogno aime l’eau, les brumes et les brouillards, qui prennent dans ses paysages une dimension presque éthérée dans laquelle les couleurs et la lumière sont modulés par un jeu raffiné de glacis. Il aime aussi expérimenter l’utilisation en aquarelle de couleurs vives que l’on trouve dans les contre-jours et avec lesquelles il essaye de rendre le phénomène du contraste simultané et de la post-image.
Il a exposé souvent dernièrement et il a gagné le prix du public et le second prix du jury à la VII édition de la biennale européenne de l’aquarelle de Albignasego (Padoue) 2002, petite ville qui hébergera bientôt le seul musée de l’aquarelle en Italie dans lequel il y aura une de ses œuvres.
