Cristina Carusi

La ricerca teorica e pratica di Cristina, dopo l’esperienza giovanile nel laboratorio di famiglia, prosegue, arricchita dalle esperienze e dalle tradizioni che contano per un’artista, attraverso la continua sperimentazione sia materica che tematica. La sua padronanza nell’usare gli arnesi dello scultore come scalpelli, trapani, lime e abrasivi naturali (pomice, smeriglio), l’aiutano nelle rese perfette delle sue opere. E infatti le sue favolose sculture utilizzano i marmi statuari che tanto hanno dato alla nostra storia dell’arte con artisti come Michelangelo e Canova. E così ancora succede, per chi come la Carusi sa far affiorare da un blocco informe creature e volti come “Les Amant, imponente scultura in bardiglio imperiale alta due metri, in cui le due figure prendono corpo, svettando forti e sicure verso il cielo, salde nel sentimento espresso ed unite alle basi, o come “Omaggio a Rodin” o “Metamorfosi” dove figure femminili escono dinamiche o languide dal blocco di marmo in parte formate ed in parte “non finite” come segno della creazione continuamente tesa alla perfezione. Molte sue opere hanno infatti il riferimento al non finito che tanto ha segnato Michelangelo, limite alla perfezione di ciò che l’uomo può fare rispetto la perfezione ultraterrena. Dal marmo riesce a togliere ed a scoprire, con tenacia ed efficacia, corpi e volti dalla dolcezza classicheggiante, di una rara esperienza emozionale, di raffinatezza e penetrante fascino estetico. Le sue opere , seppur ricche di riferimenti e di riflessioni concettuali, ci fanno addentrare nel suo animo sensibile in un percorso che porta allo spirito delle cose , al soprasensibile che è in noi. Sembra cercare un continuo dialogo tra l’Uomo e il Cielo, inserendo spesso nella dinamicità verso l’alto o nell’abbandono al passare del vento (vedi “Fortunale” o “Rinascita”), una tensione ed una aspirazione verso il sovrannaturale che è oltre noi, nell’eternità e nello spazio infinito.

Si potrebbe affermare, senza tema di smentita, nell’osservare le sculture di Cristina Carusi che il bello interiore emerge sempre a tutto tondo e si palesa all’esterno anche quando la materia domina. Materia evidente nello specifico: marmo bianco di Carrara dove la nostra ha mosso i primi passi nel mondo dell’arte. Ma il marmo docile allo scalpello si lascia modellare e prende vita. Cristina Carusi non si nega, lavora con la tenacia dei giovani, con l’esuberante vitalità di chi crede nella sua opera alla quale conferisce la sacralità del messaggio. Sotto le sue mani la materia esce dall’inerte immobilità e assume una forma a privilegiare la donna che nel silenzio della pietra bianca pretende rispetto. Nel forgiarla la scultrice prende le distanze dal mondo classico, di cui sente tuttavia profondamente la matrice culturale per portare avanti un suo dettato artistico che, nell’urlo di scomposte capigliature a racchiudere volti morbidi e levigati, acquista una particolare forza espressiva.
Perché in lei insopprimibile l’attrazione per l’affascinante mondo femminile, di cui lei stessa parte integrante, principio e fine di un percorso artistico che le arma la mano per consegnare al tempo la delicata presenza di plastiche figure dove comanda l’interiorità.
I grandi blocchi di marmo si svegliano, si addolciscono, si rendono partecipi di eventi culturali, compenetrati da scintille d’anima a perdersi in grandi crateri di staticità. Nelle sue composizioni, imperante il bisogno di chiarezza: netta distribuzione di ruoli, ricerca di armonie nelle posture, decisa scelta di equilibrio che non cede mai al desiderio di raccontare sguaiatamente l’Eros. La silenziosa voce dello spirito si fa avanti e invade il marmo, interprete della volontà di chi opera. Così, nelle delicate fattezze di volti quasi interamente nascosti da chiome fluenti dove lo scalpello non incide, ma volutamente ignora e abbozza, mentre lascia al grezzo indefinito personali intuizioni, la ruvidezza del maschile trova la sua controparte nella morbidezza del femminile, o del tutto lavorato.
Un contrasto esaltante che mette in risalto la duplice natura della scultrice: aggressività da un lato, sensibilità dall’altro. E poi tutto non va dichiarato. Ci sono aspetti della psiche che si celano volentieri sia pure sotto una fluente capigliatura, ispida al pettine, scomoda alla vista; necessario così quando si vuole mascherare, giocare sui sentimenti. La rappresentazione di se stessa, se vogliamo, dolce e sensibile ma altrettanto caparbia e volitiva. Scatta sempre la voglia di superarsi per cercare percorsi allargati dove si può confluire per un maggiore completamento.
Pudore ce n’è tanto: le sue donne sono in prevalenza spirito. Qualsiasi accessorio è pretesto per coprirne le nudità: possono essere i capelli, la ruvidità di forme appena scalpellate, i tronchi di alberi suggeriti dall’immaginazione, sta di fatto che la Carusi non si espone mai in toto, ma ama giocare e celarsi dietro la suggestiva, provocante malizia dell’eterno femminile. Donne: allungate, distese o raccolte in posizione quasi fetale, in atteggiamento di sommessa richiesta di comprensione, o abbandono di resistenza. Ma la scultrice scopre soltanto parti: un seno, un ventre, una timida morbida coscia.
Un tacito desiderio di esporsi senza parere, per essere accettata per quello che è: nuda nella sua arte. Così lancia una sfida, scommette con se stessa nella proposta delle cbmposizioni dove il bello fisico si coniuga in armonica fusione con il bello interiore davanti al quale è difficile rimanere indifferenti.

«Pur ricca di richiami arcaici e mitologici, la scultura di Cristina Carusi si stacca decisamente dall’iconografia classicheggiante e si avventura in un moderno linguaggio di scoperta e di proposta di una figurazione non di descrizione estetica ma di progettualità simbolistica. Il gesto esecutivo con cui incide e anima il marmo è morbido e rotondo (una rotondità piena e fascinante che dà il senso di una filosofia esistenziale armoniosa e serena), di liscai carezza su ritmi e movimento della materia. In questo splendore bianco e compatto del marmo di Carrara, la giovane scultrice sembra avvertire e cogliere una potenza primitiva e perenne della natura intesa come primigenia radice della vita dell’uomo...».

«...Per lei la forma spirituale si trova nel grezzo del blocco dal quale estrae gli archetipi del suo figurativo, fino a che non si librano in modo forte e nel contempo gentile nell’agile forma che lei ha voluto forgiare. La sua spiritualità si estrinseca proprio nelle composizioni che richiamano “l’intus” profondo dell’uomo con i suoi valori, problemi e contraddittorietà nel suo esistere “hic et nunc” del suo esser-ci. Non aliena alle filosofie contemporanee, contemporanea è ella stessa, non si estrania da un contesto duro come il lavoro e l’arte che caratterizzano gli Apuani che da secoli vivono “attorno e per” il marmo, dove tale è divenuto un “odi et amo” che solo un carrarese doc può sentire...».

CRISTINA CARUSI Born in Torano (Carrara) at the age of 2. she moved with her family in Vermont USA, she riturned in Italy and graduated at the Art School of Carrara. Through the work of her father, noted sculptor, since she was very young she deepen’s her vocation, working in the advertising studio of her uncle Paolo Carusi, an interest in window dressing, Sculpture in mixed technique and advertising graphic design. In 1992 she opened with her father Lucio and brother Robert an sculpture atelier, she participates and cooperates in important committees such as reproductions for international artists like Santiago Calatrava and started to participate in exhibitions and competitions. The town in which she was born, Torano, is one of the most illustrious for cultural artistic traditions in the vicinity of Carrara, joined to a millenariam extractive activity: It overhangs the sharp top of mount Crestola that, according to a consolidated report, Michelangelo had devised to carve as a light house tower for sailors. Wedged in one of the three marble river basins which can be defined as "the marble valley", had supplied valuable material for the works of great sculptors amongst which Michelangelo Buonarroti .
Some of the greatest carvers of Carrara were born in Torano like Domenico Guidi and Pietro Tenerani.
In one of it's houses, all built in white marble stones and heavey blocks, among the oratory dedicated to the four crowned saints, protectors of the marble workers, Cristina comes to birth on April 15th 1964 and the surroundings all speak about marble art and culture.
The family in which she was born comes from Moneta, a fortified village originated from a powerful medieval castle, now in ruin.
Amongst the richest landlords and quarry owners of the time, later involved in the economic disaster of the 1930's that marked the end of many fortunes of magnates of the marble like the Fabbricotti, the Carusi family, or for being more exact, the Carusi Cybei are devoted to sculpture since centuries.Not differently from other true local "dynasties" of stone workers, the Carusis' pass on, from generation to generation, the techniques of working the white stone of which they know all the secrets and can claim the presence in the past of remarkable artists in the family like Demetrio Carusi, rival against Pietro Tenerani in the competition for the "pensioner in Rome" aword in 1810 and therfor being a warthy partner in that city near Thorvaldsen.
Cristina's father Lucio, a well known artist, autor of very praised works, in 1966 is called to Vermont, USA, to give life to the granite of that area with his artistic ability.
She leaves with the family: Cristina the second child of four, is only two years old. She changes continent but still keeps on breathing that weightless marble powder that comes from the chisels and tools of Vermont, always living in contact with artists and the rough matter that changes in their hands in a perpetual metamorfhosis.
When years later she returns to Italy with her family, she chooses to attend a course of studies supplying her with the cultural basics in line with her own interests: the Artistic Lyceum.
At the age of 22 she is ready to dedicate herself to the vocation that she feels deep down inside: to carve and carve again and again. She prefers the marbles from her native town: Statuario, calacatta, cipollino, bardiglio but also carves the soft Leccese stone, Levanto Red and many other stones accordingly to the inspiration and the emotions she wants to obtain.
She works next to her father and her brother Robert - also sculptor - in the family workshop, following the common iter of the sculptors from Carrara combining theoretical studies to material working practice.
The Carusi workshop is an important one where some of the best contemporary artists in the world come and express their creativity and experience: a cultural osmosis of which Cristina is an active participant.
So her works take shape, just as it is in Carrara’s tradition old of centuries, revealing a considerable mastery and self confidence also under the technical point of view.
At the same time we assist to a continuous and untiring theoretical research by the artist who experiences various stone materials and makes different thematic choices.
The feminin figure is predominant but evolves through the remodelling of paleolythic Venus’, primitive mothers with full and strong shapes to more and more agile new figures, at times very aerial, that seem to break free from the rough matter.
Smooth and grinded, the sculpted image steps out from the crude matter and stands straight, rough or chiselled , it seems almost to free itself from it’s shell only to dive back in it.
Our thought goes back to Michelangelo’s “prisons” that seem to emerge from the marble block in which they are imprisoned.
Following the vast popular and scholarly culture of the marble field Cristina, as a free artist, liberates with her chisels the live creature hidden in the block.
It was that way for Michelangelo and for Rodin to whom Carusi dedicates a “homage” with an emotionally felt work.
Although the figurative aspect, modernly interpreted, predominates (genesis, metamorphosis, rebirth,…..), the abstraction with the purist lines is also present and the metaphysical approach doesn’t lack.
Nothing is accidental in Cristina’s work, nothing is superfluous. At the base of her creations there is a deep meditative capacity, a philosophical and creative ability that, joint to the inborn and acquired technical ability enables her to reach levels of excellence.
In the “profane” art as in the sacred, suggestive sweetness and theoretical talent as in the faces of the “pietas” on “the morning that the angels fell” or the “nosce te ipsum” emerge, placed in the centre of the spiritual and existential maze of life in the distance towards elevation and mystical ecstasy.
