"I based this “Eyes on the King Verdict” print on photos taken by Ted Soqui during the LA riots of spring 1992. Ted has a long history of photographing activists and protests, which began after the “not guilty” verdicts on April 29, 1992, for the four officers who severely beat Rodney King. I especially love the central pic of a young woman protester in a Malcolm X hat contemplating the scene. I think it is important to consider the symbolic weight of the Rodney King verdict and the emotional impact on communities of color seeking justice and accountability. At the time, 30 years ago, I remember feeling enraged that such a blatant act of police brutality was going unpunished when it was captured on video. It is heartbreaking how frequently similar acts of violence and abuse of power by law enforcement have gone unpunished, even when caught on camera. I don’t ever condone violence or looting, but I understand why LA erupted in riots and protests after the King verdict. When people feel that the American system has failed them repeatedly, things can reach a boiling point. The urge to protest injustice and the right to do so are legitimate, even if looting is not legitimate. The LA riots were a tragic mixture. However, beware of those who try to conflate protest with “criminal agitation” or “inciting a riot.” When the system fails the people, it is nothing short of patriotic for the people to protest for a solution."

Shepard Fairey è l'artista contemporaneo americano più apprezzato all'interno della street culture, compie studi artistici e nel 1988 si diploma presso l'Accademia d'arte. Si può affermare con una certa tranquillità che Obey è il fenomeno artistico più main stream a noi contemporaneo.
Nel 1989 arriva la chiave di svolta per la sua carriera artistica prende forma il progetto che gli darà la prima notorietà "Andre the Giant Has a Posse". L'idea era quella di disseminare i muri della città con degli adesivi (stickers) che riproducevano il volto del lottatore di lotta libera André the Giant. L'immagine divenne così famosa e potente che che gli stickers furono replicati da altri artisti in altre città. L'obbiettivo riuscitissimo della campagna era quello di produrre un fenomeno mediatico e di far riflettere i cittadini sul proprio rapporto con l'ambiente urbano.
La consacrazione vera e propria avvenne durante la campagna elettorale USA del 2008, che vide protagonista Barak Obama nella corsa all'elezioni del presidente degli Stati Uniti d'America 2008. Il manifesto Hope riproduceva il volto stilizzato di Barack Obama in quadricromia, Il critico d'arte Peter Schjeldahl ha definito il poster "la più efficace illustrazione politica americana dai tempi dello Zio Sam".
La carriera di Shepard Fairey vide un escalation di progetti di fama mondiale, riconosciuti dalla critica come potenti immagini comunicative e specchio delle vicende che più hanno caratterizzato la nostra contemporaneità. Dall’elezione di Obama, passando per le tematiche legate alla tecnologia ed alle piattaforme social, arrivando fino all’attenzione al clima ed ai drastici cambiamenti che il nostro pianeta sta affrontando negli ultimi decenni.
Obey è portavoce di messaggi sociali, che molto spesso rimangono inespressi, questo artista attraverso al sua riconosciuta fama, porta in primo piano tematiche difficili e assai spinose, cercando di dare una personale visione attraverso i suoi celebri manifesti.
