Background
Ido Shemi's way of introduction into the Israeli art scene is far from typical. So too his works, cannot be easily categorized and placed into a context put forward by Israel's fine art schools and institutions. In many ways, Ido Shemi is an outsider, an auto deduct, that despite working outside the norms set by his peers, has managed to succeed and put himself on the main stage of the contemporary young art scene in Israel. at the past few years shemi was invited to particapate at shows in ITALY,LONDON,CHINA,at the MOCA SHANGHAI,& The 2nd annual
Chinese International Cartoon & Animation Festival, Hangzhou, China.at OPERA GALLERY,HONG KONG,& his installation-"OLYMPIC GAMES"- was commissioned for the OLYMPIC Fine Arts COLLECTION,showing during the 29TH OLYMPIC GAMES-in BEIJING 2008,& WILL STAY PERAMMENTLY AT THE MUSEUM COLLECTION. DUE TO OPEN 2010,AT THE FORBIDDEN CITY IN BEIJING.
Despite the fact that his works have received recognition from gallery owners and art critics at the past 10 years, Ido Shemi has been for the past 18 years one of the most influential people in shaping Tel Aviv's alternative art scene. In 1995 he opened the Tel Aviv club "Dinamo Dvash", which quickly became a focal point for cutting edge art and young alternative pop culture, a place where many young and up and coming artists designers and musicians from Israel and abroad found a home. During its years of activity (1995-2002) the "Dinamo Dvash " succeeded in creating an vibrant art and music scene, that has acted as a breeding ground, for artists and musicians, many of which have since become well known nationally and internationally.
As head designer and art director for the club, Shemi has managed to create a striking visual identity for the "Dinamo Dvash", one which caught attention not only locally but also internationally. In 2001, the "Dinamo Dvash " was selected by the Italian design collective "Delicatessen" to participate in "Club Spotting 0.2": a book showcasing five clubs from around the world , each outstanding for their design and graphic outlook. The book was followed by an exhibition in Italy showing graphic works, including Shemi's own designs done for the "Dinamo Dvash".
In 2002, Shemi left the "Dinamo Dvash" to peruse work on his autobiographical art project: "The Quest for the sacred trophy", which paved his way out of the Tel Aviv underground and into the established art scene in Israel.
"The Quest for the sacred trophy" is comprised out of a variety of media - sculpture, photography, illustrations, sound affects and video loops. In fact," The Quest..." acts more as a heading given to a large body of works, created in different forms and materials. Some of these works have already been shown publicly in the last 6 years, most notably in an exhibition in the Tel Aviv Museum of Arts, and were received with great enthusiasm from critics and gallery visitors alike. Shemi creates stories, visual narratives that take on the rough and expressive language and attitude of comic books. He draws on imagery taken from the worlds of Soccer (Shemi is a self declared soccer fanatic), electronic music and alternative popular culture to creates large scale installations, three dimensional mazes made out of cheap materials, such as old carton boxes or used cigarette packs. Inside these mazes, in which the visitor is invited to wander, he places sculptures, texts, illustrations, video and sound installations. The effect is rich, colorful and amusing, a flowing narrative that tempts the viewer to explore and move like in a three dimensional comic book. The narrative that comes out is to a certain extent Shemi's own life story, but in another deeper sense, an allegory or myth that is open to interpretation and identification by each individual visitor these works are childish and naive only at first glance. Infect they contain a kind of edgy humor, a somewhat cynical approach directed towards the established and self - indulgent.
His defiant attitude is passed on not only through the content of the works but through the materials and techniques chosen Peppier Mache, industrial paint, everyday garbage assembled together in an entirely non academic fashion to put forward a strong message.
At the Tel Aviv Museum of Arts, Shemi showed the installation "Welcome to the Right Hemisphere of the Fantasist Brain": four "episodes" taken from the quest that amplify the optimistic, spiritual even somewhat religious message that is at the core of his works. Shemi asks to evoke belief in oneself, energy and strength that enable even the most hopeless "underdog" to achieve victory. "The Right Hemisphere..." is the initiation stage in the quest for victory, the stage where the hero (Shemi himself but also any visitor who identifies with the sentiments put across) receives instructions that will guide him along the way, the "holy texts" are given, and the path is revealed.
His defiant attitude is passed on not only through the content of the works but through the materials and techniques chosen: Peppier Machee, industrial paint, vintage artifacts,"israeluna" memorabelia and everyday comon stuff assembled together in an entirely non academic fashion to put forward a strong message, and a total atmosphere of living in a delusive- " carton country", that could collapse any minute .
(and the number of the "positive supporters " fans of the spy (Supporting Positivly Yourself) club squad, is increasing rapidly).
