In the Abrahamic traditions, there is a tension between the human instinct to create in response to divine experience and the first commandment's prohibition against representing the divine. In the middle ages a compromise was reached with the creation of 'illuminated' artwork, mostly manuscripts and stained glass windows. The idea behind an illuminated artwork was that rather than a mirror reflecting the divine, the artwork should act as a window, allowing the seeker to look through the artwork at the divine reality that inspired it.
This is what I seek to achieve with my artwork. The bold colours and interlocking shapes bring to mind a neotribal view of the world, one of spirit interweaving in a great dance. In creating artworks I first create a mood, then allow my manipulation of light and shape to create a permanent window onto that mood.
