Trained in calligraphy at a very young age, Lassaâd Métoui is inspired as much by Western painting (from Matisse, Paul Klee to Soulages) as by Far Eastern art, particularly Japanese. He evolves his art as a visual artist towards a modernity that transcends cultures. His talent, both rooted in a tradition of aesthetic and moral demands, is innovative, his global impact, represented today at the Arab World Institute, is proof of this and makes him a major artist in this discipline.

The work of Lassaâd Metoui offers us the dancing trinity of art, love and calligraphy. The paintings take us into bursts, sarabands and choreographies of signs, shapes and colors. Here, calligraphic art goes beyond: it is part of a broad plastic activity which overflows and subverts, as much as it is rooted in it, the simple project of a worked writing. Of the art of Lassaâd Metoui we could say what Frantisek Kupka said of Arab art: it is of the order of a pure “rhythmic song of the spirit”. He rejects formal vacuity and simple aestheticism, in favor of a paradoxical "gravity" of ornamental lightness.
