The central figure on the left wears the unmistakable Kurent mask, a powerful folkloric symbol believed to chase away winter and evil spirits—one that also reflects the artist’s own surname, Korent. Alongside it, Škoromat, with its decorated headdress and folkloric attire, and Laufar, with its wooden mask and haunting stillness, evoke a sense of ritual, celebration, and mystery. The bright ribbons and rich textures of the costumes contrast sharply with the cold, snowy landscape, reinforcing the tension between past and present, tradition and personal identity.
Is this a moment of joyous reconnection, or an uncanny confrontation with ancestral ghosts? Family Reunion invites us to reflect on how history, culture, and personal lineage intertwine—sometimes warmly, sometimes eerily, but always inescapably.
Related themes
Žiga Korent is a contemporary Slovenian artist whose work explores the complexities of perception, narrative, and the evolving human condition. Positioned at the intersection of figuration and abstraction, his paintings create a space where personal and collective experiences intertwine—where reality remains layered, fluid, and open to interpretation.
Born in 1984, Korent refined his artistic vision at the College of Visual Arts in Ljubljana, earning a Master’s degree in Painting under the mentorship of Professor Mladen Jernejec. He is a member of the Ljubljana Fine Artists Society (DLUL - ZDSLU), an association that connects and promotes distinguished visual artists in Slovenia.
His work is deeply informed by his interest in perception theory and neuroaesthetics, examining how images shape thought and emotion. Korent challenges the notion of singular narratives, instead embracing the coexistence of multiple, often conflicting perspectives. His compositions balance precision and ambiguity, engaging viewers in a dialogue where meaning constantly shifts and unfolds. Rather than offering fixed answers, his paintings pose questions—about the fragility of memory, the construction of reality, and the fluid nature of human experience.
Korent’s work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions, earning recognition for its depth, conceptual rigor, and visual intensity. In 2020, two of his works were acquired for the New Wave art collection of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia, further solidifying his presence in the country’s contemporary art scene. He lives and works in Ljubljana.
Žiga Korent’s art is not merely an aesthetic pursuit; it is an ongoing inquiry into how we see, remember, and understand the world around us.
