Diplômée de l’École nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris, Catherine Balet a débuté sa carrière artistique comme peintre avant de passer à la photographie au début des années 2000.
Son travail photographique prend alors une dimension sociologique. Sa série de portraits d’adolescents intitulée « Identity » ancre son travail dans la réalité contemporaine. Avec « Strangers in the Light », elle y intègre une dimension picturale à l’instar de peintures jouant sur les clairs-obscurs.De 2013 à 2016, Catherine Balet œuvre sur sa série « Looking for the Masters in Ricardo’s Golden Shoes » et rend un vibrant hommage aux maîtres de la photographie en mettant en scène son ami et modèle, Ricardo Martinez Paz. De Nadar aux tendances contemporaines en passant par Man Ray et Martin Parr, Catherine Balet s’est ainsi emparée de l’histoire de la photographie et recherche des pistes de réflexion quant à son devenir.
Avec la série « Moods in a Room », Catherine Balet poursuit sa démarche d’expérimentation en réinvestissant les transformations techniques du médium photographique et s’interroge sur la frontière qui sépare la peinture de la photographie.
Dans sa dernière série intitulée “Endless”, Catherine Balet mêle avec brio l’imaginaire au réel pour apprivoiser au fil des saisons l’infinie versatilité de la nature. Véritable ode à la vie, ”Endless” est une invitation à embrasser l’inéluctable force du temps.
