, José Antonio García Villarrubia nace en Toledo, ciudad que condicionará su trabajo y la forma de entender la realidad que le rodea, no en vano escribió Rilke sobre Toledo: “las cosas tienen allí una intensidad que no es común, y que no es visible a diario: la intensidad de una aparición”. Así, la pasión por dibujar su entorno le llevó desde edad muy temprana asistir a clases de dibujo en la Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Toledo, allí quizás nació en él la fascinación por el mundo clásico Elige la acuarela sobre papel como técnica principal de expresión. Su carrera tendrá un cambio trascendental cuando conoce al pintor Pedro Cano en un curso que impartió en Toledo. A partir de entonces asistirá a varios cursos con él, tanto en España como en el extranjero, el último en la sede del Instituto Cervantes en Nápoles. Villarrubia basa su trabajo, su evolución, en paciente tenacidad, pinta lo que ve, lo que le rodea, buscando conmover con la luz que arroja sobre sus motivos, a veces lunar, irreal, haciéndonos testigos y participes de una ensoñación, luz evocadora que define ruinas, calles, callejones, frutas, hortalizas, flores, templos, entre suaves y meditados colores. En su mirada, la forma, definida por luz y sombras, claroscuro y suave color, conjugan lo real con lo irreal, lo exacto con lo accidental.
