Al Torella (Alberto Torella, Napoli 1929, Roma 2019) nasce da una famiglia di tradizioni artistiche risalenti al XIX secolo. Inizia la sua attività artistica appena terminata la formazione accademica presso l'Istituto d'Arte di Napoli. Il suo primo dipinto esposto è del 1948 e la sua prima mostra personale è del 1952, a Foggia (Italia). Prosegue poi con centinaia di mostre personali e collettive, Biennali e Quadriennali, in Italia e all'estero, anche grazie alla passione per le lingue straniere (laurea e specializzazione in Lingue e Letterature Straniere).
Pittore figurativo, scultore e incisore murale (tecnica personale), trasferitosi a Roma alla fine degli anni '60, con atelier in P.zza San Luigi dei Francesi (vicino al Pantheon), ha animato la vita artistica romana degli anni '70, con importanti pubblicazioni e mostre (Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Accademia di Romania, Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, ecc.), ricevendo attestati di stima dai più importanti critici e storici dell'arte, e dai più noti altri artisti figurativi contemporanei, come Annigoni , Brindisi, De Chirico, Fiume, Greco, Guttuso, Levi, Manzù, Omiccioli, Quattrini, Raimondi, Servolini, Treccani, le cui opere, con dedica, sono nella sua collezione personale, a ricordo di un periodo straordinario del circuito artistico italiano.
Viaggiatore instancabile e poliglotta, le sue opere si trovano in gallerie, collezioni private, chiese e palazzi pubblici dall'Australia al Sud America, oltre che in Europa. È presente nelle più accreditate pubblicazioni d'arte: enciclopedie, annuari, manuali, storia dell'arte, ecc. È autore di numerose edizioni di arte figurativa, di prosa e di poesie, tra cui grande successo delle sue edizioni di Canaria e SPQR Scultori, Pittori, Quartieri Romani - Guida all'Arte della Capitale .
Il più grande fondo documentario della sua vita artistica si trova a Roma, presso l'Archivio di Stato.
