猿回し（作品版） (2025) Painting by Yoshiotetsu

日本に古くから伝わる大道芸の「猿回し」を描きました。この作品は、前に投稿した習作の作品版になりますが、作品サイズを一回り大きくしてポーズを変え、猿と人物の表情がよくわかるようにしてみました。

日本では猿を使った芸の歴史は古く、13世紀の文献「吾妻鏡」にも、猿に舞を舞わせた記述がされています。江戸時代には手厚く保護され、幕府専属の職業とまでされていました。ところが江戸幕府の終焉の後は衰退していき、第二次大戦後はついに消滅してしまいます。しかしながら、近年多くの人の努力により復活し、再び多くの人々に愛されるようになりました。今作品では、手の上でアクロバティックな芸を練習している猿と、その姿を優しく見つめる男性の様子を描いています。

I drew a traditional Japanese street performance, "Saru-tai" (monkey show). This work is a version of the practice I posted previously, but I made the size of the work a little larger and changed the pose so that the expressions of the monkey and the person can be seen more clearly.

In Japan, the history of performing arts using monkeys is long, and even the 13th century document "Azuma Kagami" describes monkeys dancing. During the Edo period, it was well protected and even became an occupation exclusively for the shogunate. However, after the end of the Edo shogunate, it declined and finally disappeared after World War II. However, in recent years, it has been revived through the efforts of many people and has become loved by many people again. In this work, I depict a monkey practicing acrobatic performances on his hand and a man who is watching him with kindness.
