Highly Recommended by the SAA Artist of the Year 2023 art competition, "Hedge" is a painting that captures the enigmatic beauty of a quiet walk through Weston Turville in Buckinghamshire. This work was born from an ordinary moment transformed by the mysterious presence of a hedge dividing the open fields. As I walked along the path to the Wendover Canal, I was captivated by this hedge—a dark mass of branches shrouded in mystery, its features obscured yet alive with the melodic symphony of birdsong.

The hedge seemed to embody a sense of duality: its dense and shadowed form evoked wonder and unease, while the fields on either side, bathed in warm reddish browns and lush greens, felt open and freeing. The distant line of trees on the horizon hinted at something beyond, adding a sense of quiet anticipation to the scene.

This painting is layered with meaning, both in its imagery and its creation. Painted over a failed work, it carries the spirit of renewal, mirroring nature’s own cycles of growth and change. The vibrant contrasts of the complementary colours—earthy oranges, reds, and verdant greens—imbue the piece with energy, while the simplified details of the hedge retain an air of mystery.

"Hedge" is more than just a depiction of a rural landscape; it’s a celebration of life’s simple pleasures and the complexity of nature. It reflects the duality of curiosity and contemplation, inviting viewers to see the beauty in the interplay between freedom and the unknown. This piece serves as a reminder of the wonder found in ordinary moments, where nature’s secrets and humanity’s imagination meet.

Hi everyone,

I’m Wolfango Chiappella. I was born in Fossano, Italy, in 1971, and ever since I was a kid growing up in the beautiful Piedmont region—with its rolling hills, vineyards, and nearby Alpine foothills—I’ve felt a deep connection with nature.

I’ve always loved mixing art and science. I studied natural and earth sciences alongside fine arts and architecture, and this blend helps me appreciate the magic of how light, colour, and texture come together in our world.

In 1997, I moved to Buckinghamshire, England, where the peaceful countryside—with its reflective waterways, gentle fields, and ever-changing skies—has sparked a fresh wave of inspiration. My Italian roots and the charm of British landscapes both play a role in shaping my work, blending classic styles with my own heartfelt impressions of life.

When I paint, it’s more than just capturing a scene; it’s about sharing a feeling, a memory, or a fleeting moment of beauty. I love using bold brushstrokes and vibrant colours to bring my compositions to life—whether it’s a warm sunset over a canal or the quiet strength of a figure. I hope my art encourages you to pause, reflect, and connect with the beauty in everyday moments. And if one of these pieces speaks to you, can you imagine it finding a special place in your home?

Living here in Buckinghamshire, I continue to draw on the natural beauty that surrounds me. My art is a personal journey—a way to connect different cultures, places, and the emotions we all share.

Thanks for being part of this journey with me
