Understanding Artists Website SEO

Is my website listed on Google?

Usually, when you cant find your site, it may still be listed on Google, but it will be listed AFTER other results. You can check if your website is listed on Google by searching the following query string:
site:MYSITE.COM (replace MYSITE.COM by your actual URL)
It will show you the pages that Google has indexed from your site.

Example with Artmajeur.com

Why isn't my artist website showing up in Google search results?

There can be multiple factors explaining that your site is not showing up in the first results. When you have the same artwork and content displayed on multiple art marketplaces and your personal website, Google may view this as "duplicate content." Google tries to show only one version of similar content in search results, typically favoring larger, more established platforms (like major art marketplaces) over individual artist websites.

What exactly is duplicate content?

Duplicate content occurs when identical or very similar content appears at different web addresses. In your case, this happens when:

  • Your artwork descriptions are the same across different platforms
  • Your artist bio is identical on multiple sites
  • Your artwork images and titles are repeated across platforms

Does this mean my website is useless?

Not at all! Your website remains valuable for:

  • Sharing directly with clients through business cards
  • Including in email signatures
  • Using in social media profiles
  • Sending to potential buyers or galleries
  • Having a professional web presence you fully control
  • Featuring your works in a space exclusively dedicated to you

It is a problem to leave it like that?

Not really: if you engage in selling your work on online art galleries, your main chances are to sell on theses platforms. Online Galleries have a commercial service that take care of customers for you and secure their purchases. Data shows that clients feel way more safe buying from an established platform, than from an independant website. Many artists use their website to showcase their works to their customers, but their let art marketplace actually sell.

We understand you might still want to get your own website on the first place of search results, but sometimes, it can be expensive, time consuming, and not worth the investment.

What are my options for improving my website's search visibility?

You have several strategies to choose from:

  1. Create Original Content
    • Write blog posts about your artistic process
    • Share behind-the-scenes content
    • Create tutorials or art tips
    • Write articles about your inspiration and techniques
    • Document your art journey
  2. Customize Your Content
    • Write unique descriptions for each artwork on your website
    • Create a more detailed artist bio for your website
    • Add personal stories about each piece
    • Include additional photos showing artwork details or in-context views
  3. Add Unique Pages
    • Create a dedicated page about your techniques
    • Add a page about your studio
    • Include an events/exhibitions calendar
    • Create a portfolio page with case studies
    • Add customer testimonials and artwork in collectors' spaces

NB: Artmajeur currently does not provide separate description fields for artworks on your website (they are the same as on your artmajeur profile). If you wish to create a separate description, you will need to create additional pages with custom content for each artwork.

Do I need to create unique content for every single artwork?

While it's best to have unique content everywhere, you should prioritize:

  1. Your most important or signature pieces
  2. Your newest works
  3. Collections or series that define your style
  4. Pieces that have interesting stories or processes

How much unique content do I need to create?

There's no exact number, but generally:

  • Each important page should have at least 300 words of unique text
  • Blog posts should be 500+ words
  • Focus on quality and value to your audience rather than just length
  • Consistently adding new content is more important than adding everything at once

What's the best approach if I have limited time?

Start small and build gradually:

  1. First, create unique content for your homepage and about page
  2. Add one unique blog post or artwork story per month
  3. Gradually rewrite descriptions for your most important pieces
  4. Set aside a few hours each month for website content

Remember: It's better to have a small amount of high-quality, original content than large amounts of duplicated content.
