Stephane Thomat (Le géomorph), est un artiste contemporain français autodidacte.
Son domaine est la recherche sur l'apparence des formations géologiques.
Sa force est sa fascination pour les textures des roches et l'aspect des massifs montagneux qui semblent dominés par le hasard et le chaos mais sont régis par l'infinie complexité des causes naturelles.
Captivé par les pics, les lignes de crêtes et les vallées, Stéphane en noircit d'abord ses carnets à dessin, expérimentant toujours de nouvelles perspectives. Il étudie aussi les textures à travers différents supports notamment le cuir pour retrouver divers aspects rocheux.
Il découvre finalement l'incroyable capacité du papier à exprimer les visions qui sont en lui. Son processus, à la fois spontané et intuitif, s'inspire de la contingence des formations géologiques.
A travers sa technique sur le papier, couplé à la peinture à l'aérographe, il s'éloigne peu à peu de la texture et glisse vers sa représentation. Les jeux d'ombres et de lumières, font surgir les reliefs qui semblent émerger des profondeurs de la matière plane.
Il imagine de nouveaux univers et nous invite à l'exploration profonde et poétique de ses visions.
Dans ces mondes inconnus, perdus dans l'espace et le temps, nulle trace de vie. Ici règne le calme absolu du minéral. Sur ces terres désertes, les montagnes éternelles se figent comme des symboles de résilience face à la frénésie de nos quotidiens. Ces œuvres illustrent l'infinie variété des mondes stériles qui emplissent notre univers dans lequel à pourtant surgi le miracle de la vie.
