DEVASTATED MIRAGES SERIES 2 of 24

Corroded by the passage of time, the space of an abandoned military complex on the Island
of Katarina, along with the land area Monumenti situated in Istria, Croatia, from the beginning of my photography
journey represents a personal challenge along with a desire to present the seemingly
forgotten space as one that is full of life and vibrancy. I consciously ignore the reality of the
area by presenting a game of shadows and patterns on crumbling walls and dilapidated
ceilings of the buildings as the second part of the “Devasted Mirages” series.

By exploring the game between shadows, natural light and diverse patterns in my
surroundings and nature itself, I strive to visualize processes like light movement and wind
direction to analyze the form and fractions of motives in order to display them in a
completely new light.

By using the in-camera double exposure technique, I often show a variety of movements of
my motives, which constantly remind me that a simple change of perspective can give
immense complexity and beauty to that which we consider “ordinary”. I experience abstract
photography as a bridge between reality and human imagination because, for me, things
are often not what they seem.

Inspired by the fact that human imagination and personal vision is untouchable and almost
always inexplicable, I wish to break out of the two-dimensional photo frame by adding
depth and movements that create imaginary landscapes in order to inspire new associations
in the observer, along with visions and emotions on a personal level.

I use the double exposure technique to add an additional dimension to my photographs and
by doing so, I strive to visualize beauty in the destructive details. By changing the
perspective, the seemingly dead walls of the complex, for me, become elaborate
compositions of physically non-existent landscapes. The idea of this imagined reality, from
my point of view, becomes tangible in the moment when (most likely unnoticed up until
now) the details begin to transform into Mirages, along with my desire that these mirages
come to life in the eye of the observer and, even for a brief moment, become mountains,
waves, volcanoes - living horizons of an otherwise destroyed architectural space.
