Rachel Hammond

Born in Christchurch New Zealand, Rachel is the grand-daughter of regional artist Pearl Daniels.

At the age of 7 Rachel's parents divorced and with her mother, she moved to Australia. In high school the art in the family came out and this resulted in Studying a Bachelor of Graphic Design in Canberra, Australia.

In 1998 Rachel moved back to the family home in New Zealand where she lives with and takes care of her father, and a Bullmastiff named Chloe.

The Coin Art paintings actually started after becoming involved in the "Double Your Way to a Million" blog community. Starting with 1 cent you double each amount of money 28 times to end up with $1,000,000 !
Noticing how many people she talked to didn't realise how important a little coin could be, Rachel decided to start selling her coin paintings on the internet.

Currently, the first set of ten New Zealand Coins has sold out, and due to popular demand, the second set of New Zealand coins (The imperial years) is being painted now. The current set includes large 40 inch square paintings. The goal is to finish at least 280 paintings which will include currency such as USD, Euros, Pence, Canadian, Olympic coins, personal coins and commissions.

These coins are painted in a slightly naive pop art style as the artist gets far too pedantic when painting realistically and would spend months on each painting !

Recently, on the 13th of December while having a routine steriod injection into her capal tunnel in the right hand, the artists doctor made a mistake and injected the solution into the artery. Rachels right (dominant) hand was completely starved of oxygen for over 3 hours. As a result she has lost the tip of her little finger, the first joint of the ring finger and has calcified arteries.
This has lead to a complete change in how Rachel paints.

While some of the Bottle caps were painted before the injection incident, the smaller versions are very difficult to complete now due to lack of dexterity in the right hand.

Photography has been a far easier outlet during this time and so certain prints may be made available also.
