Sylvester Hickmon

Native South Carolinian Sylvester Hickmon , Jr. became interested in art at an early age. He can remember drawing on the ground as a child, and later spending every moment he could in the art room during his high school years. He received his formal art training at South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, South Carolina, where he earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Art Education. For the past 20 years, he's taught art on the high school, middle school and elementary school levels. He has taught colored pencil classes at the Sumter Gallery of Art and conducts workshops on drawing with colored pencils.

Hickmon is a signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America. He has worked in oils, acrylics and relief printing, but for the past 20 years has worked exclusively in colored pencil. "I came across colored pencils in 1990 and decided to give them a try. I've been hooked ever since. It's now my medium of choice because it lends itself well to realism. I love the control and detail of drawing combined with the expressiveness of painting with color."
Hickmon's work is characterized by his rich, vibrant use of color, light and shadow. "I use burnishing and sgraffito techniques to build layers of color for my compositions which mostly depict figurative and still life scenes created in a realistic style."
Hickmon has exhibited throughout the United States, and his works can be found in many private collections. He has received numerous regional awards and national recognition for his colored pencil art which has been featured in THE ARTIST'S MAGAZINE and THE BEST OF COLORED PENCIL 5.
He is the co-author of the colored pencil instruction book "COLORED PENCIL STEP BY STEP."
