Having emancipated themselves from "traditional" art forms in the 20th century, artists have never ceased to innovate, taking advantage of all the new technologies available to them to create new forms, new concepts and new artistic theories. Many have chosen to go off on a tangent, moving as far away as possible from the "old" forms, deemed too academic, too cold, too dated, not embodied enough. But centuries of art history can't be written off so easily! And so, after years of avant-gardism, experimentation and code-breaking, many contemporary artists are now seizing on their artistic heritage and reinventing ancestral techniques and skills (drawing, embroidery, stained glass...), to reinvent the past in new ways. Still lifes, biblical scenes, odalisques, portraits, nudes, statuary... Like a duty to remember, contemporary artists draw on memories, an inexhaustible source of inspiration, to offer us poetic, almost dreamlike works blending past and present, tradition and modernity.
