Todos os anos visito esta encantadora vila piscatória e todos os anos a desenho e pinto. Eu adoro Ferragudo. Debruçada sobre as águas do mar e do rio Arade e com uma feição geológica íngreme bem aproveitada pelo homem, a pacata vila de Ferragudo é, para mim, uma das mais belas silhuetas à beira-mar plantada, que se encontra no litoral algarvio. Situada no concelho de Lagoa e com cerca de 1980 habitantes (censos de 2011), Ferragudo foi elevado à categoria de vila em 30 de Junho de 1999. Conta-nos a história que o topónimo “Ferragudo” tem raízes na existência de um engenho de ferro, que existia numa das suas praias (Praia da Angrinha) e que servia para elevar as mercadorias e o pescado das embarcações. Embora a história nos conte que Ferragudo surgiu por volta do século XIV, ocupada por pescadores que procuravam o mar para sobreviverem e que se instalaram por aqui construindo humildes casebres, existem vestígios que atestam a presença humana nestas paragens no período pré-histórico e que a foz do Arade foi cobiçada pelos Fenícios e Cartagineses. Achados arqueológicos encontrados junto ao Forte de S. João do Arade (com raiz numa torre de vigia erigida no reinado de João II, 1481-1495), atestam ainda que os Romanos também ocuparam esta região, dedicando-se à pesca e fomentando a indústria da salga de peixe. Tal como a maioria das povoações situadas no litoral algarvio, no século passado a indústria conserveira fomentou a prosperidade em Ferragudo. No entanto, a desactualização dos equipamentos e a incapacidade de acompanhar o avanço tecnológico tornou esta indústria pouco rentável e posterior decadência. Até c. 1970 a pesca continuou a ser o sustento e a principal fonte de rendimento desta povoação. Actualmente, tal como praticamente todo o litoral algarvio, Ferragudo vive do mar mas numa outra perspectiva. As ruas cuidadas e floridas pelos seus moradores, as belas praias, o rio e a sua privilegiada localização fazem do turismo a sua principal fonte de subsistência.
