Great-Grandma Lola’s Orange Grove
Pamela Carvajal Drapala
December 21, 2011
I smell of the ripe oranges
as I walk through my
Grandma’s citrus field
on a December day in Yuma.
I touch the cool flesh
of a newly plucked orange,
the orange refreshes my warm hands.
I tear apart the orange peel
and shove large slices of the fruit
into my parched mouth.
I wipe the juices off my cheeks
as I have done many times before.
My craving for oranges goes
away, until the next time I visit
Grandma Lola’s orange grove.
A big thank you to Alex Magdaleno for posting the image of my Great-Uncle and Aunt at . That's where I found their image.
I have the Yuma yearbooks for 25-25-27. Soon I will look through them and see if there are any pictures of Jimmy or Rose.
Please send me a note and I will have your email.
That picture of Jimmy and Rose was really faded and not too clear, but the larger size will look a little better. I repaired it a little with PhotoShop. If you are really good at PhotoShop I could send you the picture as scanned and you could try to improve on it.
I enjoyed your old photos of Yuma.
Bye for now, Alex

Hi Pamela,
I'm glad somebody is looking at the pictures. You are the first to send me a message, and I don't think anyone has entered a comment.
Jimmy was a good friend of my uncle Alex and of my dad, Edward. They used to write one another from time to time and dad would visit him when he went back to Yuma.
Here are some other names of people pictured. At least I think they are all pictured. If you know any relatives, and are in contact with them, let them know. Some of the pictures are just fair quality. I can send the pictures in a larger format for those who may be interested.

Drapala Gallery, a visionary painter and photographer, is committed to giving a powerful voice through women's art and writing. Based on a deep belief in the power of art to express the strength of humanity, she has founded collaborative projects that transcend creative boundaries. One of her flagship projects is the publication of art anthologies, dedicated to women artists from around the world.
In 2018, Drapala Gallery published Strong Women's Art Anthology , a collective work celebrating women in art. The project brought together international artists and writers to share their stories, creations, and resilience. Building on the success of the first edition, Drapala launched a new call for submissions for its second volume, 2020, Women Artists' Create! , designed to reflect the strength of humanity through the challenges of the pandemic.
This collaborative project is an exceptional opportunity for female artists—painters, sculptors, photographers, writers—to submit their creations inspired by the year 2020. Drapala is committed to providing a free platform for these talents, and each artist will be able to share their work as well as the story that inspired it. Beyond the art, a portion of the proceeds from the book sales will be donated to women’s and children’s shelters, adding a charitable dimension to this artistic initiative.
Drapala Gallery continues to push the boundaries of creativity and amplify women's voices in the art world, while encouraging deep reflection on the collective strength of humanity.
