« My work is about entangling women and home, leading to the phrase “housewife.” All of the photographs are reimagined interior spaces of rooms filled with décor and objects, featuring a lone figure of a woman, engulfed in her interior, often with only bits of her visible. She is both a victim of her possessions and obsessions, as well as the invisible creator of such; both satisfying and problematic, pathetic and humorous. Her home has become a site of tragedy and danger, with scenes of hilarious and heartbreaking mishaps and horror about the role of women in all societies. »

« I am adressing myths of perfection and illusion by photographically creating worlds that critique and satirize the expectation of domestic perfection - a claustrophobic experience ».

(Artist's quotes)

After studies in Graphic Design (University of Illinois) and Photography (Illinois Institute of Technology), Patty Carroll developed a singular body of photographic work, while devoting part of her career to teaching, via conferences and seminars at prestigious American and British institutions (Columbia College, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Royal College of Art, London Institute).

Known for her use of intense, highly saturated colors, Patty Carroll has been working since 2013 on her “Anonymous Women” project, which is divided into four series, staged and photographed in the studio. Its central theme is the complex relationship between women and the constraints of everyday life.

Patty Carroll's work has been exhibited in numerous international institutions (The Art Institute of Chicago, Contemporary Art Museum, Houston, Cleveland Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Photography, Columbia, Kunstgerwerbemuseum, Zurich, Kunsthalle, Cologne, Spiva Center for the Arts), and is included in public collections and private foundations (The Art Institute of Chicago, MOMA, MOCP, MCA, The Sandor Photography Collection, The Kansas City Collection, The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, The Ruttenberg Foundation).
