Visual artist and art researcher
Parya Vatankhah is a multidisciplinary Franco-Iranian visual artist, researcher, and curator based in Paris. Through performance, video, installation, photography, and painting, her work explores themes of exile, memory, gender, and identity.
She holds a PhD in Aesthetics and is currently pursuing postdoctoral research at Université Paris 8, within the AIAC laboratory. In 2024, she was co-awarded the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH) Prize, alongside the Art, Exile and Media (AME) research group of the IRCAV – Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, for a research-creation project focused on narratives of exile and artistic resistance.
She uses the body as a central space of memory, struggle, and resilience, weaving together autobiographical fragments and collective narratives within a poetic and politically engaged aesthetic deeply rooted in diasporic experience. Vatankhah’s practice addresses the complex construction of identity in the face of political violence and conflict. Deeply engaged in ecofeminist perspectives, she also incorporates natural elements as mediums of creation.
She was also nominated for the AICA France Art Criticism Award in 2023 and has received several distinctions, including the London Feminism Short Film Award. Her work has been exhibited in renowned institutions such as the Grand Palais (Paris), the Malmö Art Center(Sweden), and the Arad Art Museum (Romania).
Through the curation of exhibitions and artistic programs, she actively supports and gives essential visibility to Iranian women artists in exile or silenced in their home country. She is also a recipient of the Laïcité Prize awarded by the Grand Chapitre Général du Rite Français of the Grand Orient de France (GODF).
