Tayyar Özkan werd in 1962 in Turkije geboren en studeerde in 1983 af aan de faculteit Schone Kunsten van de Ankara Gazi Universiteit. Hij begon zijn vroege werken te publiceren tussen 1976 en 1989. In 1989 verhuisde Özkan naar de Verenigde Staten, waar hij begon aan een succesvolle carrière in grafisch en textielontwerp, waarbij hij van 1989 tot 2018 samenwerkte met bekende merken zoals Tommy Hilfiger, Polo Ralph Lauren, Christian Dior, Joe Boxer, Tiffany en Mavi Jeans.
Tegelijkertijd volgde Özkan zijn passie voor strips. Zijn langlopende stripverhaal Caveman debuteerde in 1993 in het tijdschrift Heavy Metal en wordt tot op de dag van vandaag gepubliceerd. Zijn eerste Caveman -boek werd in 1997 uitgebracht door NBM. In 1994 werkte Özkan samen met schrijver Joel Rose en filmmaker Amos Poe om de mysterieuze graphic novel La Pacifica (282 pagina's) te maken voor Paradox/DC Comics. Hij inktte ook vier nummers van The Dreaming voor Vertigo/DC en droeg bij aan de collecties The Big Book Of... van Paradox.
Özkan publiceerde zelf vier Caveman -strips en bracht een hardcover graphic novel uit via de Franse uitgever 2L Productions, die door FNAC in Frankrijk werd erkend als "Boek van de Maand". Caveman werd later in verschillende landen gepubliceerd, waaronder Spanje, Nederland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Een full-color Caveman- roman werd in 2011 in Turkije uitgebracht.
Naast zijn stripwerk heeft Özkan animatiefilms geregisseerd, personages gecreëerd en storyboards ontworpen voor tv-commercials, films en animatiefilms. Hij gaf ook een cursus Sequential Art, How Comics Rule , aan de School of Visual Arts in New York. Zijn Caveman- strips werden tussen 2005 en 2006 in de krant Guangzhou Daily in China getoond en zijn strip The Age verscheen in Heavy Metal in de VS in 2012-2013. Özkan werkt nog steeds als freelancer in dezelfde vakgebieden en is onlangs begonnen met het maken van acrylverfschilderijen op canvas,
